Progress report: November 3

Somehow I'm always surprised when I have an awesome day outside. Today was no exception.

Being sick, I didn't get a whole lot done. But I did make some progress.

I misspoke this morning and we started the day with only five bags of leaves, not six. I gathered twelve more today, with many breaks in between.

Storage is becoming an issue. This is going to be fun.

During my frequent breaks, I spent a lot of time just walking around the yard looking at things, listening to podcasts, and taking pictures.

Thanks to @rawutah, I started the podcasts today with Joe Rogan's interview with Paul Stamets, the fungus guy. Totally turned on by all that soil business. I also listened to a few of @sustainablelivin's older episodes about soil, permaculture, and agorism. All stuff that turns me on.

Here's a picture of yesterday's avocado mushroom. It shot up and fell over overnight.

I watched it throughout the day as things happened. There were flies and gnats on it often, and it's green avocado-looking top turned white and revealed some weird substructure.

There were plenty other mushrooms too. Check out these guys on a dead stump in the back easement.

And these little ones on a rotting piece of wood.

It seems like everywhere I looked, there were mushrooms! Like in the kids'digging corner.

Or in the place where I may or may not build another bed by the clothesline.

And every time I turned over some leaves, I found mycelium.

Or giant earthworms.

It's cool learning all this and being able to see it all applied. The life of and in soil is just incredible to me. I may even pick up a microscope one of these days so I can get a better look at it.

I know one thing for sure. I like for my feet to be dirty like this at the end of the day. And what a day it has been.

Hope y'all had as good a Saturday as I did. It's late, and I'm going to bed now.

Tomorrow.

What a great array of different mushrooms you have all over the place! Some macro shots of those would look awesome.

Good job on the leaf collection, hope you are taking it easy, being sick isn't fun. I hope you recover soon!

I'm on the mend. Might try and take on a bigger project today. The chickens need integrated.

My phone usually does pretty good macro shots, I'm surprised I didn't get any. Here's one of what I called the avocado mushroom this morning. Turns out it's called a common stinkhorn mushroom.

Looks like it's breaking down. I'm going to keep an eye on it and get more pictures as more things happen :)

I've never seen a common stinkhorn before, looks pretty cool! Will be interesting to see how it looks as it breaks down. I look forward to updates!

Hope you managed alright with the chickens :)
