Movies that made me laugh and still make me smile: My Nominations for the PHC Top 3 Monthly Contest

PHC Top 3 - Blog Header Image.png

This is my entry into this month’s PHC Top 3 contest - not that I’m promising to be a regular contributor. This is post is also my contribution to @traciyork’s #SteemBloPoMo challenge- Day 7

This month's topic is comedy movies

My selection is based on a couple of things: I have not, for the last 20 or so years, watched many movies. The Husband and I have a dreadful track record of selecting films, going to see them and walking out satisfied. I won’t say happy. Not possible. We’ve made choices based on everything from the cast to the title. And come short. It’s not a matter of taste. It’s inexplicable. The problem is now largely solved by where we live - no moviehouse and the selection is now curated by a local and when something really good comes up, we go. That said, I do have a current wish list and I can't wait to see Bohemian Rhapsody

NoThe PartyMy selection: why?
3First up is The Party with Peter Sellers. Released in 1967, I remember seeing it as a “home movie” when I was at boarding school in the late 70's. In the 21st century it would not pass muster: politically incorrect and full of more than just subliminal racism and stereotypical behaviour. However, I do remember, and I suspect they are two classics in comedic scenes where Sellers’ character is trying to feed the parrot. To the extent that “birdie num num” has become a regularly used expression in a certain generation’s children. More memorable, though, was an even more drunk Sellers’ character not able to access the WC to relieve himself. I think, that to a girl, that sent us all to the bathroom! Having seen the film as a mature adult in the late 20th century, I do know that it’s very dated, but my memories of the film and how I laughed then, still give me a warm feeling and make me smile.
2Bridget Jones’ DiaryYes, yes, I know it’s a chick flick but, hey, I’m a chick, and I’m a sucker for a happy ending. There was much that resonated for me in this film, as I am sure it did (still does) for women of a certain age and with the social pressures that heap themselves on our hips, bosoms and uteruses. Yes, we are supposed to be living in a world where these things don’t count, but they do. We hate to acknowledge it, but they do. They really do. Bridget is desparate and tries to pretend to eschew them all, but falls victim to them and, as we all do, and falls hard. It’s a Mills and Boon on celluloid with Colin Firth playing the archetypal hero. What’s not to like - other than Colin Firth (in this film)?
3When Harry Met SallyOk, so I’ve said I’m a sucker for chick flicks and this, for me, is one of the ultimate chick flicks. I don’t like Billy Crystal as an actor, and I do love Meg Ryan - she’s in one of my other ultimate chick flicks (now there’s a #PHCTop3 topic for you), too. Again it’s the central character who resonates for this chick: supposedly happy with her life and equally happy with her foibles and doesn’t care that it’s an issue ordering her meal the way she wants it. And she’s got to a point in her life that if the guy wants the girl, by g*d he’s got to work for her. Until she has her own epiphany.
Of course who will ever forget “I’ll have whatever she’s having…” The best ever F U moment. If you’ve not seen it, Google it. Better still, watch the entire movie.

Yes @fionasfavourites, I knew we could entice you in! Haha! Interesting choices, I'm not much of a chick flick watcher (are we surprised by that, I don't think so haha) but I have seen 2 and 3. I've been discovering new films as this contest has gone on so I'm intrigued about The Party now.

Good luck for the contest and thanks for entering! Watch this space :)

Hahaha! I thought I could not miss the inaugural round... Also, I will say that if the topic doesn't resonate, well...I will be MIA.

@nickyhavey

I'm not much of a chick flick watcher

but you HAVE seen 2 and 3 ?!!?!?

Well, as for The Party, you will have to do a bit of time travel and some suspension of reality. I do warn you: it's very, very dated. Classic Sellers, though...

Haha I can't say I watched those by choice 😛 it was under duress

My parents have shown me some quirky cult classics from the 70s so I have got some exposure to the "other world" - there have been some memorable ones though. I'll brace myself if I get a chance to watch it 😁

At last, three movies that I've seen and enjoyed. Bridget Jones Diary was so funny. And: when Harry me Sally was another good one. But The Party with Peter Sellers has to be a classic now and brilliantly funny...

hahaha! I think we show our age @wales.

It's very cool to see you enter @fionasfavourites

For a start your username was made for this contest! 😁

Great choices too. Peter Sellers is a genius, hands down. Everything he did was pure brilliance. Although it's funny that one of my favourite moments with him came in outtakes for one of his movies. He is in a lift with 3 other guys and they try to insert a fart into the scene.

Gut wrenchingly funny. Sellers has lost control. I'm actually in tears watching this clip again. 😂

The scene with Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally has become iconic. I think BC is hilarious too.

Bridget Jones is definitely 'out of my comfort zone' if you like. It has a massive fan base though.

Great post Fiona and best of luck with the contest.

Oh that is hilarious! Thanks so much, @cheese4ead for a good Sunday laugh :D

I confess that this post was a bit of a rush. There are others but I didn't really have the time and now, as I'm thinking.... One of the series I wanted to mention was the Carry on... films. Hilarious. And yes, Peter Sellers with that dead pan expression...

And, of course, there's Monty Python and all the John Cleese films. A Fish called Wanda?

Actually, my user name has a more than 25-year history....

I think there are many more deserving entries than mine, but thank you for the wishes!

Fiona

The Party and When Harry met Sally, excellent selection Fiona. Never really watched chick flicks so don't know the other entry.

Have an awesome day!

Ah, @joanstewart - I didn't see Bridget Jones on the big screen - it was on TV, and truthfully, I probably wouldn't have paid money to see it. I guess that at the time, I wasn't in the target market. That said, when I did see it, it made me laugh!

Movies at our local bug house were cheap, the not so popular movies we usually walked about 4 km there. Big hit movies or ones we really wanted to see we took the train into Johannesburg and paid the price for better sound quality.

TV has taken a lot of the real movie experience away.

We used to get 10c to go to movies on a Saturday morning. 5c for the ticket and 5c for interval. Living in Grahamstown we NEVER got the good movies until much later than anywhere in the country. We just had to wait. No train to a moviehouse and a trip to PE or East London was out of the question.

You are so right @joanstewart

TV has taken a lot of the real movie experience away

Wonderful to see so many entries to fill up this first round! Yours exemplifies one of the things we were hoping people would bring to the table--their own personal take on their top 3. Different movies resonate with different people, especially when it comes to humor. The prize pool is nice, but even more we hope everyone is a winner when it comes to the joy in sharing some of the films that have resonated with them over the years!

We appreciate you bringing some joy to our day!

I haven't seen any of these movies :( But with your explanations, now I want to. I think I hear a bit about Bridget Jones' Diary.
I will definitely look up these movies :D Thanks for sharing them, and thank you for participating in the contest! <3

@foxyspirit - I'm not sure how much they've dated, but you will soooo enjoy both When Harry Met Sally and Bridget Jones... Good for getting a bunch of girlfriends, wine and no men around so that you can, figuratively speaking, slay them! LOL

HAHA! I like you're way of thinking! I will definitely plan this one out :D

We'll take you when we can get you! 😉 I have not seen your first selection, but I think we all have a few movies that resonate with certain periods of time and always give us a laugh. I'll have to look it up. Your other two are definitely solid choices for this chick! Bridget Jones is definitely a relatable character in my opinion. I love Meg Ryan in that role, and many others! Great choices and many thanks for taking the time to join in this round!

We'll take you when we can get you! 😉

Ahem, yes! Hahahaha!

Honestly, @plantstoplanks, give The Party a wide berth. In addition to being British, colonial humour, it really has past it's sell-by date. As I said, more memorable in the memory than in the watching - if that makes sense lol!
