Halloween is coming...

PHC Top 3 - Blog Header Image.png

Welcome to another month of the @phctop3 contest! As one of the panel members, I get so excited for the first of the month (as do @foxyspirit, @cheese4ead and @nickyhavey). As usual, though, I was also stumped as to what I wanted to put out for my own fun selection to partake in the spooky theme this round because there are soooo many good choices. Our entries are null for prize winnings, but the true reward is jumping in on the fun and seeing what everyone else chooses, too!

I have to say while I don't always enjoy being scared, I adore Stephen King as a writer and get into some creepy flicks on occasion. However, back in my teen years my best friend was a HUGE horror movie fan. I think I just about watched my fill of scary movies in the decade that we were really close. You name it, we probably watched it. We went back to earlier classics checking out Suspiria and of course The Exorcist, and also went to theaters to watch the latest movies. I remember being totally taken in by The Blair Witch Project and running to my car after the movie because I was so creeped out. Her favorites were always the pretty typical slasher films from the 1980's and 1990's, though.

To go along with her taste in entertainment, she also loved to go to the local haunted houses this time of year. Movies I can at least watch behind the pillow and close my eyes at the scary parts, but going through a haunted house always instilled some major fear in my bones! Talking to Gaz in our Discord server jogged my memory about a few particular visits to said attractions. Now I can look back and laugh, but at the time they weren't that funny!

Atlanta has some pretty "killer" haunted houses and the like. One in particular that always rates really highly is Netherworld. They pull out all the stops in that one. I remember one year going when we were probably about 14, maybe 15. We couldn't drive yet, so my mom took us that time around. To give you a little background, my friend was a whole lot shorter than me. Being the chicken that I am, I made her go through the maze of spooky rooms first. As we continued to go through and I got more and more scared, somehow I ended up right behind her grasping on for dear life. At one point I was squeezing so hard I almost simultaneously choked her and tore an earring out (close call on both). I left drenched in sweat with a terrible adrenaline hangover.

Somehow in subsequent years I still let her drag me along to different haunted houses. The last one I ever want to was another pretty popular one that was actually more of a haunted trail. By this time we were in college, and we went with her now husband and one of his friends. Again, I remember almost pooping my pants with fear, but this time I also had anxiety rearing its ugly head in a different way. Between the fear, a strobe light, and some smoke for effects in a little cabin along the trail--I had a full-blown asthma attack! After they realized what was happening, they cut the effects and pulled me and our group to the side so I could calm down and recover. The staff was nice enough to offer us free tickets for next time since we were less than halfway through. Needless to say, I didn't use my voucher. ๐Ÿ˜‚

As traumatizing as those experiences were, I still look back fondly because my friend and I were really thick as thieves back in those days. Obviously it was a strong friendship to last me almost killing her in a haunted house, and then me almost dying years later. Ahh, memories.

10400899_40006245349_6591_n.jpg Us sometime in the early to mid-2000's. She looks too sweet to have such a taste in movies, doesn't she? ๐Ÿ˜œ

In homage to dear friends, all my scary characters are found in some of her favorite movies, and of course often featured in any respectable Halloween attraction.

This months topic is SCARY CHARACTERS

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number One

Jason Voorhees

My Reasons for the Nomination

Friday the 13th is an iconic horror flick. Who hasn't seen that mask on Halloween, and any respectable haunted house pays homage to the film in some way. As with many of the horror movies of the time, they made multiple sequels, some better than others. We did laugh our way through the 3D one, but it might have had more impact if we actually had the glasses to see it in all its glory!

Nomination Number Two

Pinhead

My Reasons for the Nomination

Another classic, Hellraiser never failed to scare the bejeesus out of me. Just looking at the guy gives me the shivers now. I think there was one haunted house that we went to where they had someone dressed up like this and he just stood in the middle of the room staring you down as you walked across to the other side. That look freaked me out more than the unexpected spooks later on in the night!

Nomination Number Three

Leatherface

My Reasons for the Nomination

I almost forgot another one of my least favorite things at haunted houses--chainsaws! Even though I know they make them safe, there is something blood curdling about hearing that sound and thinking about someone chasing you down to chop you up one limb at a time. So of course I couldn't leave out the infamous slasher from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They've remade this one, as well, but the original is the epitome of horror. Quite gruesome in a number of ways. Perhaps that paved the way to me not eating meat...

I hope you all got a kick out of my choices this month, though hopefully no nightmares after being reminded of these creepy dudes! I definitely wouldn't want to wake up with any of these guys next to me in bed. Looking forward to seeing the characters that might have kept you up a few nights...

Oh my goodness, needless to say you have much more courage than I @plantstoplanks! My family loved watching scary movies but I knew they would just give me horrible nightmares, geesh. The old black and white scary films are enough for me. Believe it or not I do know these characters ..... lol

Oh gosh, I just remembered another family story about watching a scary movie now, too. My dad scared the daylights out of my mom and I when we were watching a thriller with a creepy snake scene one time. A robe belt can be awfully threatening when tossed from a balcony onto two frightened ladies. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I do actually enjoy some of the old black and white ones. You can't beat Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price and Boris Karloff!

So remind me later to never go to a haunted house with you. I don't want to have to resuscitate you and I also don't want to need resuscitating.

My favorite one here has to be pin head. I seen that movie at such a young age, I ended up hiding behind the couch! It was the 3rd one. I can remember that feeling of being scared to death till this day. Have you seen the new one? It looks awesome!

Don't worry, I'd have to be knocked out cold for someone to drag me into one these days, haha!

I haven't seen the new one. I'll have to look it up. Seems like they are remaking all the old classics anymore. Some are alright, others they need to just leave them be. I would be curious what they'd do with Pinhead, though. All of those creeped me out, so I imagine the new one I'd watch behind the pillow, too.

I can say, without too much detail that it starts off pretty good. Even had me gagging a couple times. The ending... Meh. But to each their own.

Great pick of scary people.. I have seen chainsaw massacre and the hellraiser movies so much when I was younger.

Now if only it would finally cool off here then I could really get in the Halloween spirit after calling up these ghouls from my memory. ;) It was actually interesting looking up some info about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Apparently some of the crew went vegetarian (at least temporarily) during and after filming.

Haha... Too much blood. Very hot here at the moment too and so humid...

Hey @amy-goodrich

Still plenty of time to get an entry in! Here's the link to the main post

We would love to see your nominations. ๐Ÿ˜

Well I'm glad I read this in the morning and not at night! Wow, no more haunted houses for you ๐Ÿ˜‚ you have one hardcore horror loving friend, I wouldn't be seen dead in a haunted house... so at least you gave it a go... And nearly died yourself!

Great choices here as well, some classic scary folks causing carnage. It's going to be a month where I read posts between my fingers I think ๐Ÿ˜

Haha, luckily I didn't have any nightmares after conjuring up these beasts. I'm glad I can laugh about some of those experiences now because they certainly didn't seem so funny at the time. I bet if I called up my pal today and just said Netherworld she'd probably go right back to that visit and start laughing, too. This was kind of fun to mix up the gore with the fun memories to lighten it up a bit. ;)

I haven't seen any of these movies, but I am aware that they were very popular, and they were very scary, so these are great choices!

I never got into the gory horror genre of films though. Would that be "Gorror?" :) The only "gorror" movie I ever saw was "Last House On The Left," which didn't scare me so much, but made me very sad. So that's why I don't like them so much.

Gorror--I like it! Well, the name anyway. I don't watch much of that genre anymore, because as you said they can be a bit tough on the senses in a number of ways. I get enough horror just watching the news on the rare occasions that I turn it on...๐Ÿ˜‚

Fun bonding time seeing who would be more scared in the movie house, as for events that happened, traumatizing as they were you remember them with a glint in the eye and fondest for each other still.

Happy haunted house hunting together into old age.

We definitely were the best of friends, as I wouldn't go through that trauma with just anyone! :) She's got two little girls now, so I'll be curious to see if they take after their mama as they grow up and love all things scary, as well!

Sure to have a lot of fun in the future, my sons and I still lurk in passages to scare each another coming around a corner into the dark, one never grows up!

Love it!

Oh you so hit the nail on the head with these. When I mention Pinhead to people, they look at me strangely 'Who's that?'

Definitely some classic horror characters, right? This really was tough to narrow down, but I think I hit the ones that really scared me the most. I think Pinhead might top the list on the one I would least like to come across on a dark night...

I am trying to figure out which ones right now for mine. I know this sounds corny, but when I figured out Jason's whisper he stopped being scary to me.

Great picks, @plantstoplanks.
I adore Stephen King... Too bad his latest work isn't all that scary anymore

My dad is a big King fan, so I think that's where my older sister and I found our love for his work. We still pass around books when one of us buys the latest. I would agree with you, though, a lot of the later stuff isn't quite as frightening. I think my favorite collection of stories was the Different Seasons book with Shawshank Redemption, The Body, The Breathing Method and Apt Pupil. Brilliant writing even if they weren't among the most chilling tales (although I think Apt Pupil ranks up there with its relationship to actual historical terrors against humanity).

There have been so many terrifying experiences after watching horror movies that I have already a couple of years to stop watching them!

Will we see your picks for the scariest soon? ;)

OMG! Haunted houses - reminds me on the boarding house ghost! She will feature if I do get round to a post... As for the movies, they somehow passed me by...๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Ahh, now you have to do a post! Can't leave me hanging with the teaser of a ghost story...;)
