120th Philippine Independence Day | Araw Ng Kasarinlan

in #philippines6 years ago
As a Filipino, taking part in Philippine Independence Day Celebration is a pride. Way back 2012, our organization, LAWIN — Leaders Alliance for OFW's Welfare, Integrity and Needs, was the main organizer of 114th Philippine Independence Day with the Philippine Embassy and Bayanihan Council in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

It's our pride and honor as the month long celebration was successful. We only had 11 active members then and all have full time job — Teamwork Matters!

Philippine Independence Day History

Information Source: Wikipedia

Independence Day or Araw Ng Kasarinlan; also known as Araw Ng Kalayaan is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed on 12th June, commemorating the Independence of the Philippines from Spain.

Philippine Independence from the colonial rule of Spain was proclaimed in Cavite led by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo on 12 June, 1898. The declaration was solemnly read by its author, Ambrosio Rianzares Baustista, and signed by 98 Filipinos, appointed by Gen. Aguinaldo.

The proclamation was first ratified by 190 municipal presidents from 16 provinces controlled by revolutionary army on August 1, 1898. Then again ratified by Malolos Congress on September 29, 1898. However Philippines failed to win international recognition of its independence.

The Spanish government later ceded the Philippine archipelago to the US in 1898 Treaty of Paris. The Philippine Revolutionary Government did not recognize the treaty that led to Philippine-American War that lasted from February 4, 1899 to July 2, 1902.

In 1902, the US Congress passed the Philippine Organic Act — also known as the Philippine Bill of 1902 and the Cooper Act. The act was superseded by the 1916 Philippine Autonomy Act which contained the first formal and official declaration of the US government's commitment to grant independence to the Philippines.

After World War II, US granted full independence on July 4, 1946 which was originally scheduled for 1944 but interrupted and delayed by WW II. Date was chosen by the US because it corresponds to the US Independence Day and that was observed in the Philippines until 1962 as Philippine Independence Day.

President Diosdado Macapagal issued Presidential Proclamati0n No. 28 on May 12, 1962 which declared June 12 a special public holiday throughout the Philippines,

"In commemoration of our people's declaration of their inherent and inalienable right to freedom and independence".

July 4 holiday was renamed as "Philippine Republic Day" on August 4, 1964 and proclaimed June 12 as "Philippine Independence Day".

It was indeed a very nice experience, it tested our patience, friendship, teamwork and effort, dedication and commitment. Tap on our back right after the event, it was a success and with pride — WE MADE IT!!

But we were not informed, there's more! 🤣🤣 THE HARDEST PART — Tally/Accounts!

Nevertheless, it was indeed a nice experience and if I'll be given a chance again... will definitely do it! Sleepless nights and tiredness are all worth it — for the community, for our nation, for the Philippines!

And of course, a very BIG THANK YOU to Philippine Embassy for their trust on us. To my Mom, who made our Filipiña and Patadyong — all by herself! I am so proud of you!! 😘

Until the next event 😉
