'New' Philippines is now 7,641 islands

Philippines just got bigger

Back in my elementary days, we were taught that our country, the Philippines, is composed of 7,107 islands during low tide and 7,100 islands during high tide.

Previously, NAMRIA (National Mapping and Resource Information Authority), with the use of IFSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar), a mapping technology, said that the newly found islands were not only 400 but 534. All in all, the Philippine archipelago is now composed of 7,641.

I'm from here and it's only now that I've learned about it. I'm quite shocked. :)

The textbooks should be updated now so that our young children will not be confused. If in the near future, NAMRIA will find more, at least the number in the new textbooks is closer to reality than that of the old ones.

Check out the report on CNN Philippines here.

NAMRIA is over here should you want to know about them.
