Thought of the Day #5: What If "God" Was A Self Delusion?

in #philosophy6 years ago

Omnipotence Paradox has been around for centuries. There have also been many "God" related discussions, paradoxes, thought experiments etc. But there is one that I haven't really seen during my self-learning sprees. But before that I want to say that this article isn't about the existence of God or similar entity. It's more about the philosophy about the existence of an omnipotent being.

Now Let's Look At A Different Question

Will immense power appear as unlimited/ultimate power?

What I'm asking is that can there be a being so powerful that would become unable to be convinced that oneself is Omnipotent. Take a more relatable example. Take a child born to a billionaire family. Children don't wake up in the morning thinking I want to buy a country. At best they'd want a cool ship or a plane to travel the world. With enough wealth at disposal, the child may come to think that he/she can get whatever that is desired and his/her wealth is unlimited.

One learns about the world through interacting with the world. Things get measured in relative terms. Imagine yourself in following movies. You'd be such a huge deal. Now imagine you woke up with amnesia knowing nothing about anything in the world of Idiocracy. Even if you had delusions of grandeur about your intelligence, there would still be no way to disapprove/debunk your supreme intelligence.

My Inspiration For This Article

I actually got the idea from Buddhist Cosmology. According to the material I've come across, Buddhist Cosmology explains events as similar to what is described in The Big Bounce Theory. Buddhism mentions about subtle plains of existence of the "Devāḥ"(Deities) which are beyond the human perception. Then there are the Brahma worlds that are beyond the perception of the "Devāḥ". It is said that even the lower Brahma worlds get destroyed along with the destruction of the universe and after an eternity/aeon there comes another big bang and the lower worlds are eventually formed starting from the higher levels.

It is said that one Brahma died in a higher world that escaped the destruction and then was born in a newly formed Brahma world (3rd highest Brahma world) without any memory of a previous life and the might and power of this being was immense.

Think about a version where the above scene look mundane.

This great being with no previous memory thinks of itself as someone who has arisen without a cause and is unaware of the higher realms/planes of existence. After a while this great being wishes for another life to come into existence and another Brahma who die in a lower world is born to this world. This newly born is weaker and less mighty than the former. The former thinks that it is he who created this new life as this new life was born after his wish. The newly born thinks that he was before me and claims to have created me; this seems plausible.

Not a single greater Brahma than the first is born to any of the lower worlds and this Great Brahma become convinced that it is the creator of the universe and this isn't really any different from human calling themselves the most intelligent species in the universe or early scientists calling that Atom is the smallest unit of matter. Anything else was beyond there comprehension and they committed logical fallacies. They also had so many accomplishments to blind their judgement and confirm their claims.

Basically they didn't push enough and really sought if greater existed. they were all satisfied with their knowledge and what they knew at the time . The so called scientists of the era of Isaac Newton in their arrogance claimed that if all the starting positions of every single piece of matter in the world, they could calculate everything that has happened and that will happen in the universe. It wasn't falsehood or deception from their side. It was simply the extent of their knowledge.

Just Think About It

The technology we posses is simply magic not just for some isolated tribes in Amazon but also to a place like Somalia, Afghanistan etc. A computer program that can make a call to book a reservation or even a simple act of 3D printing or levitation or taking a photograph and re-focusing whenever you want to can look like some miracle. Along with time we'd even be manufacturing diamonds and other gems. We could technically sell these achievements as acts of divinity to a group of people that don't know better.

What if we really had a being that would make Ego from MCU look like someone from An Amazonian tribe? What would this great being think of itself. It was even said that when the lesser Brahmas died and was born to Devāḥ or Human realms, further spread these thoughts of Brahma as the supreme creator and maintainer of the universe. It wasn't a baseless claim. It was merely a matter of incomplete knowledge.

Don't over complicate things taking these statements as claims of absolute truth. I have no such power to verify them. But I can see how these claims make sense in a thought experiment. So think and ask question. At the very least you'd save yourself from the embarrassment of worshiping supremely advanced tech.

I don't think anyone should claim absolute truth. Even atheists like myself don't, so you don't have to worry about anyone taking your words to the letter.

If God is that omnipotent and powerful, and he doesn't even realise it, then what would be the point of worship? You raise an interesting question. That would honestly destroy all Abrahamic religions in one swoop, but if the Abrahamic god does exist, then he's most likely not omnipotent, and just a little powerful.

Erich von Däniken is actually someone who believe in "God" but he is also someone who think most of the religious texts are actually describing Ancient Aliens. He has made many errors and exaggerations. But he also make many great points too. We can replicate miracles using technology and and speculative fiction covers a great deal of content that could be considered miracles.

Personally I don't believe in an omnipotent creator. But someone could claim that an Anti-spiral like being (it was a collective consciousness if I remember correctly) exist and I wouldn't object to that.
