The company Voigtländer was founded by Johann Christoph Voigtländer in Vienna in 1756 and initially produced optical instruments, including optical measuring instruments and opera glasses. From 1839, the year when the invention of photography was published, came lenses and from 1840 complete cameras for photography. The lenses of Voigtlander were revolutionary because they were the first mathematically calculated precision lenses in the history of photography, designed by the mathematics professor Jozef Maximilián Petzval. They have an unprecedented high light intensity of 1 / 3.5 and were therefore used to shorten the then still necessary long exposure times, especially for portraits.

Das Unternehmen Voigtländer wurde bereits im Jahre 1756 in Wien von Johann Christoph Voigtländer gegründet und stellte zunächst optische Instrumente her, darunter optische Messgeräte und Operngläser. Ab 1839, dem Jahr, als die Erfindung der Fotografie veröffentlicht wurde, kamen Objektive und ab 1840 vollständige Kameras für die Fotografie dazu. Die Objektive Voigtländers waren revolutionär, denn sie waren die ersten mathematisch berechneten Präzisionsobjektive der Photographiegeschichte, konstruiert von dem Mathematikprofessor Jozef Maximilián Petzval. Sie haben eine zuvor ungekannt hohe Lichtstärke von 1/3,5 und wurden deshalb zur Verkürzung der damals noch nötigen langen Belichtungszeiten vor allem auch für Porträtaufnahmen eingesetzt.
