Do you know what this is
I wonder how many of you recognize what this is from this first shot, so let's see and let me nowt say much more till after you see the first image.

This shows a little more of what it is, incase you did not recognize it in the first Image. I will not say what it is yet, but will say I have built so many of these over the years I have lost count.
Some ask me to tell stories about my time in the field so I guess this is a good chance to tell one.
Many years ago in one of the Missions we had a few of these trailer mounted ones delivered to the port so we had to go and pick them up and return them to the base ready to be deployed to offices around the country.
We took off tot he port with a convoy of about 6 vehicles to the port, and though we had enough time to make it back to our base in one day and not have to stay overnight in the city where we picked them up.
We miscalculated that driving with trailers in tow we had to go a bit slower, and secondly did not factor in some snow that came down along the way and slowed us down even further, so making a short story long here I guess, but it ended up it got into the night and the breaks failed in one of the vehicles and the mechanic we had with us couldn't repair the breaks and suggested we leave the vehicle behind and continue on we were not near anywhere safe to stay for the night and there had been some fighting in the area recently so it wasn't particularly safe there.
But me being me, I didn't want to leave one of the Trailers behind as it had taken ages to get them out of Customs and we had a ne=ed for them.
if it had just been the vehicle I would have left it, but the two vehicles that did not have trailers hitches, so I decided I would drive the vehicle without breaks and a friend who I trusted a lot, would drive one of the other 4x4's in front of me and act as my breaks for the few hills we had to go down on the Hour and a half trip back to base.
To make a long story short we made it back to our Headquarters safely with no damage to the trailer, but a bit of damage to the front of my vehicle and the back of the vehicle my friend was driving, and I think I must have lost 5 pounds from stress and sweat along that drive.

And for those who did not know what it was here is a shot of the full Satellite dish, they come in various sizes, this one is an 11 Metre Satellite dish, and we still have many of these installed and they provide a backbone for network and voice connectivity for many locations we have offices around the world where there is no leased lines or connectivity.

It's funny that these actually look antiquated @tattoodjay but soon we'll have so many new (though we won't really see them as they hide them pretty well) little dishs for 5G which has been ushered upon us all without asking...I wonder what that world is going to be like :/
technology has changed so much in the time I have been working in this field and the change just keeps coming for sure
Oh my gosh, what a cool story. I had no idea what type of device it was until I saw the bigger picture. I could tell it was for some kind of communications or signal transmission, but that was as far as I got. It’s great that you preserved life and limb and all satellite dishes and trailers on your big adventure! Bumpers at least can be fixed.

Yeah I was glad, looking back at how it worked out, but it probably was a crazy and a dangerous idea, but it all worked out well in the end ;)
Cool, I guessed it right off. That is a heck of a story and I can relate. I had to do the same thing with my van one day while my husband used our other car to be my brakes. Thankfully we only had to drive a few miles to get home. I was a wreck. lol
Its kind of good to hear someone else had to do the same, and yes I was a wreck when we got back, its seemed like a good idea at the start but going down a few of the hills was to say the least pretty scary but once I started i just couldn't back out LOL
I am glad you made it safely home too. It was a white-knuckle experience.

I guess there really isn't a way to prove that I recognized what this was from the first image. :)
Quite the experience. It is amazing, and scary, what we are capable of when we're young, but I probably would have attempted the same thing, though if someone else with me were better at driving trucks, I would have been the one in front instead. :)
I have to salute you, though. Who knows what would have happened to the truck had you left it there. I hope your boss/leader was happy you did what you did, despite some minor damage to the trucks, because I do think it was the right thing. Scary, dangerous, but ultimately, better than leaving the truck there.
I've done some stressful driving in my time, though, and now I avoid it as much as I can. :)

Yes looking back I do think it was a totally crazy idea to do, but it worked out pretty well, Luckily i was the boss of our section, so the biggest trouble I got in from my Boss was why I was on the trip and had not sent the team, I didnt exactly brief him on why the trip took so long LOL
Yes I to avoid stressful drivign these days I guess with age has come some common sense
I have been asked by a few people to share some of my interesting experience when working in the field in Missions, and believe it or not this as probably one of the less crazy experiences to relate and fitted these photos :)
Some of our churches are equipped with the larger satellite dishes, mainly for conferences held twice a year, but every once in a while there's a special broadcast in between they're used for. They generally sit right out front so you seem them going in and out. That's basically how I knew. :)

yes Satellite comms is still used a lot for news feeds and broadcasting and where other options are not available for audio such a telephone but its not ideal due to latency,
Dont hold your breath waiting for more of my adventures, I am OK with talking about them with colleagues at work who have been through similar, but for people that havent experienced that life they may seem weird bizarre or unlikely if that makes sense, but I am giving serious thoughts to writing about some of them
What an adventurous job you have :) And, it turns out we are colleagues, kind of :) Of course, I recognized this "plate" from a glance. There was a time when it was the only chance to connect our remote departments to corporate network. But it was not good for a voice because of latency.

I knew anyone that worked in the field would recognize it right away, I used to always joke the first dish we installed wasnt anything to do with comms but was a big WOK for our bar-b-ques LOL
Yes the latency made telephone calls a bit of a disaster but it was more reliable that the HF comms which was our only other option in many cases, and infact we will have some sites where Satellite comms is all we have
I guessed an antenna of some sort, but not the kind that's attached to a massive dish.
Its actually a reflector on a Satellite Communications Dish so your right it is an Antenna :)

Thanks for the link I remember reading about that place a few years back pretty amazing, I think before to long the Dishes will be primarily used for Observatories and less and less for communications and video feeds

I agree on that, i alos see tele/comunication devices getting more like poles now a days. My uncle works for Telenor , and build them antennas :)

Yes I was a telecom tech for many years, built Satellite communications towers radio repeaters etc etc I miss those days to be honest now I just shuffle papers and attend meetings
