Film Forum

On a walk along West Houston Street I came across an Old Film theatre and got a couple of shots

This is the sign for the Film Forum, it is a non-pofit theatre at 209 W Houston Street in Greenwich, it began in 1970 as an alternative theatre for screening Independent Movies.

When it opened it had 50 folding chairs one projector and an annual budget of $19,000
Where it is now on Houston Strete and 6th Ave was built in 1990 and is a 4 screen Movie theatre and is open every day of the year, has 5000 seats, 60 employees, and about 280,000 admissions a year with a 5 Million dollar budget.

And this is the signs it has on the wall showing some of the current movies that they are showing, its good to see a location for the smaller independent movies, and has an old time charm to it I feel. hence why I went with Mono edits

I love it. Your B&W photographs certainly set the mood, but I really like the idea of an 'indie' sort of theater.

Here in Yuma we have the 'City Theater' that has been restored and renovated that shows 'not first films' on a semi regular basis. It is also used for all kinds of recitals and live shows. It's really a cool place.

But my all time favorite was the "Magic Lantern" in Spokane, Wa. Started in the early 70s with folding chairs and a suspect projector :) It grew and thrived into the late 90s at least. I have no idea if it's still in business.

I just went and looked. The Magic Lantern is still going strong!

I remember reading about the Magic Lantern or maybe it was in a show or documentary and its a place I would love to visit, I do love these old theatres its like stepping back into history a little

I love these old-timey theaters, where the inside smells like last weeks popcorn and they still carry the smaller bars of candy. Some actually do!

The edit on these is superb! I love the mono, almost sepia tone in the first one. I just love what you have done with it.

Thank you for sharing your work!

Although i havent been to one for ages I do love them as well for the exact same reasons

Thanks so much for your awesome support

I haven't either! I am not sure why, but, it was only when I thought about it that I realized how long it has been.

That was the same for me, well we do not go out for movies anymore as LUlu cant sit in a theatre for that long, but maybe when we retire and are near the kids and grandkids I may get to go tot he odd movie

All you have to do is ask a kid or grandkid... who wants to go to the movies! LOL

Is your snow cleared up yet?

OHh Yes I am sure Zoey and Zach will be asking me to take them to movies NOwt sure how many Kids movies I can handle lOL

OMG! That is right! Oh, that changes everything!

But then again I am a big kid at heart I probably will love them

Yeah.... can you scooch over and pass me the popcorn????

I like these photos so old fashioned, you use a kind of filter? By the way I like the description post too, I enjoy reading more info about the photos and the places or the people in it

Thanks and not exactly a filter but I did do a bit of editing in Photoshop to get these effects

Wow! I’m impressed about the history and the present position of Film Forum you just presented!

It started little and then grow massively!

Thanks @tattoodjay for sharing this wonderful and motivational shots.

Yeah its great to read about a coop growing like that isnt it, sadly to often these days you seem to read the opposite

It represents the memories of the parents'generation. They will have a strong resonance when they see these posters.

yes being in the grandparent age I can relate to what you are saying

This is great! We love watching the old movies. (Often more than the new ones ;) ) Those theaters were the best, the grainy film along with good old popcorn, nothing better!

Howdy there JJ! wow, you mean it's a free theater? Or just real cheap? lol. Looks like my kind of place!

No I do not think so independent ie not tied to the big Movie theatres or film companies, I think they must charge to cover costs and allow growth

Yeah that makes sense JJ, especially in a place like New York City! I can't imagine how expensive it is there for businesses.

nothing is cheap in NYC, thats why things like supermarkets are soo much more cramped in NYC than out of the city, floor space carries a premium price in the city

Howdy again JJ...so true..how far out do you have to go before prices are reasonable, the boroughs?

It varies up and down all over Boroughs are cheaper generally but some parts of some boroughs are still pretty high I am not even sure what rental and housing costs are in the city now I know where I live is so much more affordbale

Howdy tonight JJ! How far away from NYC are you guys?

By Road about 70 Miles, but the delays on the highways can be horrendous, so I take the train and thats about a 2 hour commute each way
