Snapshots of Cripple Creek

in #photofeed6 years ago (edited)

A few weeks ago I was able to spend a few days in Cripple Creek, and I warned all of you before I left that you would have to wade through a lot of photos from Colorado. Cripple Creek is an old gold mining town that used to be absolutely kicking. According to someone we met there, the Gold Rush was bigger in Cripple Creek than it was in the Yukon and California combined. Which is crazy to me, but hey..they would know better than I. Cripple Creek is now a tiny little town that revolves around tourism in the Summer. Notably there is an old theater, casinos, museums, and a few gold mining mills that were left up from the hey-day. Interestingly enough though, there is a new fully functional gold mining area that many of the people work at, that brings in over a million dollars a day. The mining processes are much more thorough these days, so they even re-mine areas that used to be hot-spots, and are able to extract gold from those areas today.

Not really sure what this building was, whether it was a house or building in between businesses, but I loved how it looked.

One of the casinos in the area, that is pretty much empty now, but when Summer hits apparently is quite full

While this photo definitely does not match the color scheme of this post, I wanted to put this in here. This is the old Butte Theater, which used to be a massive theater hall, transformed into other businesses (such as a dancing school, furniture store and a few other things) and eventually was restored to a smaller theater (with the lower level being owned by the fire department). We had just kind of wandered in, and one of the owners of the theater was kind enough to give us a solid history of the theater.

Anyways, if you made it to the end congratulations! I'd love to hear if anyone has been to Cripple Creek and what they thought of it! I thought it was a cool little town, especially since we were there in the off-season and nobody was really around.

Sort:

So old school. Were you tempted to drop it all and stake your claim somewhere?

Hell yeah dude! The only thing holding me back was that I couldn't find my little gold shaker/filter thing they used to use to separate gold and dirt. Otherwise I'd be out there now!

Hahaha, ol mate Wes Anderson would love Cripple Creek... love your squarey photos.

Cripple Creek is in Colorado? What era were all these buildings built? 1800s?

Yes sir, it is in Colorado. From what I remember there was a big fire near 1896, so I assume most of these were built right after? I'm probably wrong though ;)

"This is great!" says me! Love the glimpse into the town, definitely still has a gold rush feel to it judging by your pictures. Did you use the bottom blue slider for these or are the oranges and blues just like that? Either way it looks awesome.

Yeah man, it felt like the wild west a little still! So dry and awesome.
And yeah, I tweaked the blue slider maybe by 15 or so?

Now I wanna watch True Grit or something haha.

Right on, looks sweet.

That's a cool background of Cripple Creek, interesting how modern technology/techniques let people come right back and be more thorough about mining gold even after a hundred years.

I can feel the history from the pictures, these buildings look like they've seen a lot. But dang, they must also be quite sturdy too to last for what I assume are many decades.

4th picture down is pretty sweet view and batching photos by color scheme is a cool idea... maybe it'll help me take more interesting photos haha

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when we were told how efficiently they were still mining gold in the same spots that used to be consistently mined.

It was really interesting to see a lot of the buildings were not in pristine shape, but held up well.. Definitely weathered but still going strong.

Wow, all those standalone brick buildings are unlike anything I've ever seen!

Haha, yeah they were pretty rad! Definitely not what you normally see
