Should you buy Canon 5D Classic in 2018 - First impressions

in #photofeed6 years ago

As i started to play with photography i never had an opportunity to photograph with a full frame camera. As photography is not my source of income (i do some paying jobs but it is rear) there was no way i could buy 5D mark IV or 1dx. So i dismissed an idea of buying a full frame. Until one day i saw an ad for a camera that was made in 2005.
It is crazy to buy a 15 year old, 12.8 megapixel DSLR! Or is it?

After some research i decided to go for it, so 4 days ago it arrived. The price of it was 250EUR or around 300$.
Here are some first impressions about it. I kinda love it :)
You need to know what you are doing as you need to go back to the basics with it. There is no live view, no video, it has 9 focus points and the the ISO goes to 1600 and after that you have H (that is 3200).

On low ISO it makes great photos, and i can say that i like how they look even strait from the camera with no edit.

As i never had an opportunity to edit some of the new full frame files i can't compere, but i do like what can i do with a RAW file. Recovering of Highlights is pretty good. This photo was overexposed by more than 3 stops and some of the whites were gone.

This one was overexposed by 3 stops and it is recovered great.

Now the part that i know it will be lacking. The low light situations and that not so great high ISO capability. What do you think it is usable and how much noise are you ready to tolerate is personal (and it depends for what do you want to use the images), but i think the ISO 1600 is decent.

And here are some images on ISO 3200 and i can say it is not the best example as i was lacking more light (so the photos are originally a bit underexposed)

So my first impressions on should you buy a 15 year old camera? If you have some kind of knowledge about photography and you are looking for a cheap solution, i think you could do more with this camera, plastic fantastic 50mm 1.8 and flash (you can find new yongnuo flashes for 70-140$ depended is it manual or ttl) then with some new Canon 700D and a kit lens.

I feel like a child that got a new toy so i will continue to play with it, so more photos and thoughts about it soon :)

What do you people think about the photos, did you ever used 5d classic, are you surprised with the results or you think it is not good enough?

Sort:

I bought the 5d classic back in 2016 then got the mark ii and now have the mark iii. The 5d is a great camera!! Once you go full frame you’ll never go back!!

that is what me and my wallet are afraid of :D

Haaa!! Exactly why I don’t have the mark iv right now!!

it is crazy, but in my mind it was 5d classic or just wait to somehow someday buy a new mark IV or V or what ever will then be out :)

Absolutely. For me the question would be whether to spend the extra $250 to move up to a 5Dii and get live view, which I use a lot. My ii is a backup now but I was using it as primary until the middle of last year, it was a real workhorse camera for me.

i would then probably wanted to go for a 5dIII because of really good video option and then it is all out of my budget :) but yes not a bad idea.

I have bought a lot of Canon cameras, 20D, 5D, 40D and 7D in that order. As you can see I stepped back from full frame and the reason was that I couldn't afford prime lenses for my 5D. So what I have to say is that it's all about the lens, keep investing there and the body upgrade comes next. Overall I think you did a smart buy, enjoy it :)
