Akaroa Cemetery - South Island, New Zealand

in #photofeed6 years ago

The best way to enter the historic Akaroa Cemetery is short but hilly stroll up Rue Jolie from central Akaroa until you enter the iron gate-sign of the “Garden of Tane”.

The mature native trees block out the sun and the twerps of birds enclose you after entering the garden. The welcoming sight of “old-school” children’s playground equipment is interesting for both young and old.

Don't make them like they used to. A paint flaking metal horse ride for five.

Well-kept natural trails criss-cross around the trees in this mini botanical garden with entries and exits all round, I walked up to a side road exit and started at the Roman Catholic entrance of the cemetery.

The steep setting on a slope, overlooks the ever-changing water-colour of the harbour below and beyond to the green farmland above. It is an exceptionally scenic location to be buried.

A modern way of decorating a grave.

Akaroa Cemetery had its first burial in 1850 within the grounds of the Anglican section. Not long after followed a Roman Catholic and a Dissenters area. The grave inscriptions are reminders of prominent pioneering families of Akaroa, including French settlers who also have another cemetery in Akaroa.

An early French settlers grave mixed with the British.

The Anglican section under the volcanic hill and next to a sheep farm.

The lower boundary of the cemetery is secluded behind trees a few steps from Beach Road and the white wooden lighthouse. The walk can be done easily within an hour and close to Akaroa's main street.

Maybe research a spot for yourself at an envious final resting place.

Izzy the first photo is breathtaking! Such an amazing perspective of the landscape. I liked the modern gravestone as well, such a good photo and a great way to remember someone :) thanks for sharing, great post!

Thank you as always harry for your comment. Yes this is an old visit memory, when I got my first real camera a Nikon D90. It helped my photography greatly and Akaroa is so scenic.
