In Which We Visit a Greek Orthodox Church in Vienna

Amongst the many beautiful churches scattered around the city of Vienna, I found a little surprise! The gorgeous Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. (Grchenkirche zur Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit.)

The church is not far from the Peterskirche (which is one of my very favorite Viennese churches and of course we will get to that one later) and was definitely NOT on my radar. In fact, I never would have even known it existed if I hadn't been touring around for the afternoon with a local friend who happened to know of my obsession with churches. He planned the surprise specifically for me, and I'm sure he got quite a kick out of me squealing with delight (reverently, of course) walking into this interior. It's pretty spectacular, the colors are incredibly rich and deep. I loved the dark wood and the blue accents, not to mention the gilding. The artwork was stunning, and EVERYWHERE! The church itself is rather small, and it is just covered in fine art no matter where you look. These gorgeous religious icons fill an entire wall.

While Vienna is certainly well-known for its baroque churches, the architecture of the Holy Trinity church is Byzantine Revival, which is not as common and provides a fresh look that stands out in the best way. It is also a more recent church than most of the beauties in Vienna, dating only back to the mid-1800s.

This church was definitely a real treat for me, and I'm so glad I was able to visit! Definitely worth stopping by if you're in Vienna anytime soon.
