Found Fungi

Imgur

This odd little fellow was found growing in the dirt of my driveway.

About 2 months prior to finding this one, I'd found another growing nearby and on closer inspection, was really suprised to find that it was quite hard to the touch, like stone, when I was expecting it to be soft and spongy, like a mushroom.

Using references from Canberra Nature Map, I believe the species is called Pisolithus Albus or White Dye-Ball Fungus belonging to a group of fungi commonly referred to as an Earth Balls.

A mature Pisolithus fruit body is cylindrical to pear-shaped to globose in shape, from just a few to over 20 centimetres in maximum length, white to brown externally and with brown, powdery spores present and exposed. The powdery spores are easily blown away by even slight breezes.

If you would like any further information please refer to this factsheet

Anyhoo, it will be interesting to watch it develop and it might even be interesting enough to provide me with another photo opportunity at a later stage.

Glad that you still enjoy captured the beauty of nature around you 😉 it always nice to identify something, right😊 wish I could have a book that I can use to identify the plants around me too.

Yes, I'm always looking for something to photograph and I like to identify the species, for me, it's just learning for the sake of learning, really... but I get a lot of local information from a website called Canberra's Nature Map that records sightings and images of animals, insects and plants in the local area, most (if not all) sightings are submitted from members of the public. Perhaps there is something similar in your local area too..?

Uhhmm.. I don't know @alphaccino.art.. never found a good catalogue to submit a picture and get the information about it. I need to do it manually by searching from wikipedia or other good source, not from my country though.

I love that you managed to identify these cool fungi. Not of any use, but they're still pretty cool. Great picture.

Thanks, it's become a bit of a hobby since I moved to a new area and became fascinated when seeing insects that I'd never seen before in my life... but as mentioned in my previous comment, it's also been a welcome outlet for my photography as I'm able to submit my images to a nature conservation website that maps wildlife sightings in my local area.

What an interesting looking bit of Fungi, I would have thought it was soft as well,

yes, underneath the 'skin' it's quite densely packed with spores (?) or stuff that turns into spores lol but the colour is also a very dark brown which resembles soil and is nothing like the flesh you get in (eating) mushrooms.

thats very interesting, thanks for the info :)
