Wasps are insects that most people can relate to seeing them, especially yellow jackets. Although sometimes disturbing, they serve important ecological functions. They are predators of many insects, especially plant-eating insects.
They lay eggs on the leaves or inside their host and when wasps develop, they eat their host. Usually what we consider to be garden pests is: aphids, cabbage worms, army worms.
Parasitic wasps are useful because they can be released into agricultural systems and function as natural biocontrols of insect pest populations. After the parasitic wasp completes development, wasps appear as adults and kill the host.
