Picture Profiles on DSLR Cameras

in #photography5 years ago

Picture profiles are used to give more choices when it comes to adjusting the photos/videos coming out of your camera. Picture profiles affect contrast, color tone, saturation, and sharpness of your image. The goal is to get a certain look right in camera. If you shoot RAW picture profiles don't affect your RAW photos, but if you shoot video profile you selected is baked to your clips and that look is what you get to work in post processing.

I heard a lot about Log profiles, as many use them to record flat video (low contrast, high dynamic range) to get better footage for later color correction. Some high end Canon cameras have C-Log option but mine 80D does not. But you can find some third party picture profiles that try to do what canons C-log does, so that is how i ended up getting EOSHD Picture Profiles

So here are some shots taken with different picture profiles provided in EOSHD Picture Profiles

C-Log shot from the camera and edited. From the first impression i think i like what i could get in later color correction.

One area where could be really useful to use Picture profiles is live streaming, where you don't have an option for later color correction. From this few clips that i have taken i see that it is important to learn when and where to use certain profile. I do like the Mono-Adams on my inside shot but, for me, it does not look so great on some outside shots. Also i think i need to practice getting the right exposure for different profiles.

Most of the info is here in the photo above but if you want to see some babeling, struggling and overall wirednes you can check out the video by clicking on the photo below :)

Are you using picture profiles? Do you have a favourite? Do you like any from those that i used here?

I still have a lot to learn about video... Fortunately for me, all of my videos are shot with my cell phone and any color corrections are done in iMovie, nice and easy. But I'm curious, how do you load those EOSHD Picture Profiles into your camera? Or is it something that is done on the computer after you shoot the footage?

you are loading them in the camera, so if you shoot jpg or record video it is applied to the footage right away. i think that there are some programs that import it with the RAW to.
I think i could make some screen shots how to do it, it is not hard.

Interesting, I may look into that more for the Canon... Thank you!
