Trip to France - Part 18 - St Thomas' Church, Strasbourg
This is a perfect place to escape the summer heat and to rest tired tourist's feet in the cool and other-worldly environment.
This church seems less visited than it should be given it's fascinating interior. The sepulcher of the Marechal de Saxe near the rear of the sanctuary should not be missed, neither should its history.
This military hero of Louis XIV's France was denied burial in Catholic Cemeteries or churches and found his final resting place in Protestant Alsace. Also worth seeing us the organ console on which Mozart played during his brief period of residence in Strasbourg.
As you walk back toward the church entrance from de Saxe's tomb look up at the Silbermann organ. It is beautiful to see, but if you are lucky enough to be in Strasbourg for a concert go and hear it by all means.
