Christmas is coming. The presents are getting wrapped and some have already made their place under the tree. But let me not rush too hastily into it. I want to read the mystery of the season, the Christmas story and discover its power; attend to the meaning of it all and to the challenge the story poses as to how I live and what I regard as important.
May I hear the voices of angels and follow the weary shepherds – the refuse, the forgotten, the cast-asides – and go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, and see it again as if for the very first time, if only in my dreams. Waiting is the hardest part, but it can be the best part too.

I have to admit my ignorance of the day. I have heard of St Nick which of course reminds me of the song Little St Nick lol. That is the extent of my knowledge!
Acceptable for an ugly American. :) Of course, I say that in jest. It is well known that we as a whole know very little about other cultures.
In the days leading up to December 6, children throughout Europe put their shoes or a special St. Nicholas boot in front of the fireplace or the front door at night to find them filled with small presents the next morning. A larger amount of gifts is usually brought on the eve of St. Nicholas Day or December 5. See here
