Peanut cactus vs Peanut cactus

in #photography4 years ago (edited)

I have been planning this post for a while, but didn't have the photos of both plants blooming. Last year only one of them bloomed so it couldn't really be the same. This spring I noticed buds on one plant and few weeks later on the other. Bingo!

Chamaecereus Silvestrii

Two or three years ago I received a few tiny itsy bitsy cuttings from a friend of mine. They were literally the size of a peanut!
I took two pots and planted some on each. I left one outside on the balcony with other plants, and the other one on my east facing window. Just in case they didn't like one post they would grow in the other one, right?
Well... they loved both!

All those photos is the same type of cactus - Peanut cactus.
They are the same age, but look different due to conditions they are growing.

The one from the window sill (photos above) has milder conditions. The 24 h temperature difference is also not as significant. It is stretched and flimsy. And lack of cold nights in winter made it skip blooming. It is bigger, but the stems are thinner.

The one form the balcony (photos below) gets much harsher weather conditions, strong sun in the summer, winds and rain. It grows much slower, but the stems are also much thicker and more sturdy. It also blooms more regularly.

Such cute little peanuts :)

The flowers are about the same, though (again) the one that grows on the balcony produces much more buds and blooms earlier in spring.

Yes, they need that sun and temperature fluctuation to do their thing

Yep they do. That's why they are all so happy outside.
I am still glad I could see the difference in their growing speed and look if kept in difference places. I think I will keep it like that.

Beautiful but those are some peanuts I’m not interested in munching on! 😅
