Beltane Fire Festival: The May Queen and her Court
So here is a shot from the Beltane Fire Festival, which is an ancient Gaelic ritual that takes place every year in Scotland. It is a celebration of the coming of summer and the return of fertility to the land and typically takes place on the evening before May 1st.
In this shot you have the Green Man appearing before the May Queen's court, together they form a procession which is driven by the beat of drums which urge it towards summer. The procession consists of a bunch of different characters that are linked to the may queen and the green man. Together the procession heads to a large bonfire which they light together to mark the beginning of summer. More drumming and dancing and inevitable partying follows. It is a celebration after all.
