The Homomonument in Amsterdam

The Homomonument is a memorial that was built in the centre of Amsterdam by the Westerkerk (just around the corner from the Anne Frank House). It was built to commemorate all gay men and women who have been persecuted for their sexuality. It was erected in September 1987.

It's built right onto the canal, or one point of it (its three triangles in a triangle - you'll see the map at the end that illustrates this) is and its a popular spot to sit and relax and watch the canal boats go by.

There's a sign next to the monument explaining its significance. In Dutch Homo just means gay, whereas in english it has become something of a slur so it always makes me do a double take when I see it written down in dutch.

On this map here you can see that it takes the shape of three large pink triangles made of granite, set into the ground so as to form a larger triangle. The Homomonument was designed to "inspire and support lesbians and gays in their struggle against denial, oppression and discrimination."

It was the first monument in the world to commemorate gays and lesbians who were killed by the Nazis.

It's awful this happened, but it's amazing we can create this small spaces in our cities to remember the things we've done to our fellow humans. I've never seen this monument by the way, so interesting to learn about this as a Dutchie :-)
It is awful, and it's good we commemorate it. I only learned about it because I went on a canal boat tour the last time I was there and they pointed it out to us ;)
Thanks @pixresteemer :)
