Halloween Procrastination Adventure (Original Photography)

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

Howdy,

Procrastination has become this week's theme. Today, I had the best of intentions to get some homework done. My usual place for coffee and wifi was full, though. There weren't any parking spots and I could tell it was packed! What began as a search for another place to work quickly became a trip to New Ulm, followed by taking photos of rural graveyards. Well, it is Halloween, after all!

This is the same graveyard I stumbled across last summer, after getting my truck stuck in a ditch for several hours. It was a bit of a surprise to see it again, and the midday lighting made for some strong contrast. This time, I was actually able to read some of the stones and, well, they apppear to be in German. This area was settled by German immigrants and still has a lot of German heritage.

There ought to be some sort of placard here to explain the huge bell next to a cemetery in the middle of nowhere. My only guess is that maybe it's loud enough to wake the dead. No seance required!

Procrastination continued, once I got home, although I did manage to get about an hour's worth of homework done before the next project presented itself! That included making apple crisp, then carving the pumpkin I bought last week.

"Where's the candle," you ask? I didn't have a candle handy, so I cut open a glowstick and pourd it's luminous liquid into the pumpkin for a light source. Then, I set up a tripod and gave the creepy Jack-O-Lantern a full photo shoot.

Tomorrow's going to be a homework-intesnive day, but I think the photos were worth it!

Great photos! #cemeteryphotos
I remember seeing a cemetery in South Dakota that had once been beside the church, but the church had burned down or been taken down for some reason and was no longer there. But they had the bell in the cemetery rather like the one that you took a photo of. They did have a placard up with a photo of the old church and an explanation of the bell.

I love your glowing pumpkin!

Interesting. Maybe this was something similar, though there is an old-ish church with another small cemetery less than a mile up the road. Where was the one in SD? I lived out there for awhile, as well!

I don't remember for sure, but some where south of Mitchell down near the Missouri River. I had gone out there to see the area where my great-grandparents had homesteaded near Avon SD.

Ah, I never got that far. I was living in Watertown for a couple years. It was one of the most desolate, boring places I've ever been. Seeing the old homestead would have been interesting. Is the house still standing?

No, they never had much of a house. It was more of a shack and they only lasted for 2 years out there before they came back to Northern Illinois.

After living in SD, I can't say as I blame them! Especially if it was near the turn of the century. Things would have been terribly difficult out there.

The stories of the hundreds of rattle snakes would have been enough to send me home!

Very interesting images @fotosdenada I've never gotten involved with Halloween, one of the reasons being; it wasnt part of our culture in New Zealand where I grew up but I understand it is big in other countries. The glow stick was a 'brilliant' idea and looks very effective in the last photo. Enjoy doing your homework tomorrow. What are you studying?

Halloween is a big holiday here, but mostly for children. I very much miss being in Spain for All Saints Day, as the pastry shops all have those huesos de santo or saint's bones candies for sale. Yum!

Nice glowstick pun! lol – The glowing liquid is fun to work with for photos. I'm a Spanish masters student, so I teach an entry-level Spanish class every semester and am taking online presentation and writing classes this semester.

It's interesting how certain fesivities or occasions can trigger special memories for us isn't it? All the very best with your studies @fotosdenada I'm sure you will do very well my friend.
