ThrowBack Monday - School Days at the University of Benin, Nigeria

"Twenty children can never play together for twenty years." - African Proverb.
Some eight years ago, immediately after my coursemates and I wrote the exams that would usher us into the penultimate year at the university, we posed for the photograph you now see. Beaming with excitement, this photograph would mark our slow but progressive academic triumph.
A few weeks ago, I was going through my archive when I found this photograph. It revived old memories and so I decided to share it.
Once a Cafeteria, Now a Lecture Theatre
The white building you see in the background, where we wrote the last papers, is known as Basement in the University of Benin. It is, to this day, one of the most popular places in the university.
In the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, we were told, the building used to be a cafeteria where hungry students got food at subsidized prices. But as corruption gradually and generally begins to swallow up infrastructural advancement in public institutions across Nigeria, the cafeteria became unsustainable and was converted into a splendid lecture theatre.
