A Supercar Breakfast Rendezvous - Durban, South Africa

Many foreigners think that South Africa is some type of jungle, where we ride elephants and cheetahs to work. Granted, we do have vast wildlife areas, but we also do have some very large, established, modern cities. And lurking in these cities, you’ll find people who have enough money to buy some very, very expensive cars.

And what do you do when you have a super car? Hang out with other like-minded individuals, of course.

A large club consisting of these like-minded individuals comes in the form of the IBV Supercar Club - pretty sure the name describes it enough. I’ve taken photos at a few IBV events before (one of which you can read about here), so I already knew what to expect. Interestingly, the starting point for this run was a mere 200m away from the starting point of the previous run in the link above.

Unsurprisingly, It should be noted that this area in general is probably one of the most expensive in South Africa, so it’s only natural to host a super car event here. For example, the buildings you see in the background of most photos have penthouse suites on the market that are currently selling for a touch over USD $3 million.

No, this car does not belong to that YouTube guy Tanner Fox, but it’s almost a carbon copy.

As with my previous photo-heavy articles, this post will be more of a visual showcase, with some captions beneath each image providing some additional context, as well as listing any interesting facts about the car pictured.

And yes, I shot this entire article using a lens that is manual focus and manual aperture. Do you have any idea how difficult that is? I'll tell you...it's difficult.

Ready? Set? Go!

There were only three Lambos in attendance - all of which were dealership cars, and not privately owned. I really thought some of the wealthier individuals would have purchased one by now, but they don’t seem to be in such high demand.

IMG_7014.jpg
Ferrari - on the other hand, were very well represented. I counted a minimum of five in attendance, and know that there are plenty more that didn’t make it. You’ll spot various of Maranellos finest in this article.

And I thought the wing on my STi was big…

IMG_6946.jpg
An Alfa Romeo isn’t exactly what I would consider for a “super car”, but I don’t make the rules for these events. Behind it is a Porsche Cayman GT4 (great car - I’ve been fortunate enough to drive one before), and a Ferrari 458.

IMG_6982.jpg
I was asked to take a few photos of this lovely lady, and…well… why wouldn’t you?

IMG_6937.jpg
When you're tired of your Ferrari 488 looking like every other 488 out there, it's time for some serious customization. I've heard rumors of the cost of modifications to this car, which I won't disclose here - but let's just say it's an amount of money most of us could easily live off for a year.

IMG_6959.jpg
One of the things I love the most about these events is the sheer amount of colour on display. Supercar owners like their vehicles to stand out, and it certainly makes for an attention-grabbing scene.

Interesting side note about the photo above - can you see the pier between the trees in the distance? That’s the same spot where I shot the blood moon solar eclipse from a few weeks ago. You can see those photos here on Steemit.

IMG_7012.jpg
I mentioned there would be a lot of Ferrari's in this article, so here's a stock 458 to add to the photo count.

IMG_6963.jpg
Hidden right in the middle of the haphazard parking arrangement was this McLaren MP4-12C. Fitted with an aftermarket exhaust that probably cost more than all my cars put together, the big mac was responsible for setting off a few alarms of other cars parked nearby.

IMG_6934.jpg
Before some light rain started falling, some of the owners were brave enough to leave the roofs down on the convertible models. This Ferrari California interior is more than a mere few years old, but still looks great in my eyes.

IMG_6961.jpg
Speaking of rain, you can see a few drops forming on the wing of this Porsche GT2. Known by many as the "widowmaker", the Porsche GT2 isn't the type of car you'd want to drive in the rain. Thankfully, the rain never amounted to anything serious, and stopped shortly after.

IMG_6958.jpg
Late arrival? Sorry - right to the back you go. This arctic white Ferrari 458 was looking a little lonely all the way at the end of the line, but it gave me plenty of space to appreciate the design.

IMG_7011.jpg
Just in case you forget how much power your Roush Mustang makes, there's a handy bonnet decal to remind you. Must be embarrassing if it gets a different reading on a dyno.

IMG_6941.jpg
Power jokes aside, the silver 'Stang certainly looks the part. If it crashed into a crowd, the crowd would probably apologize (bad Mustang driver joke).

IMG_6955.jpg
While I love the fact that this is a 2017 Nissan GTR, I don't have much more to say about that registration. But the sticker? Pretty cool I guess.

IMG_6965.jpg
It still amazes me how Audi somehow managed to shoehorn a massive V10 engine into the tiny body of the R8. This particular model wasn't in the "V10+" guise, but it still emitted a great exhaust note. Nothing better than a high-revving V10 right?

IMG_6949.jpg
I really love the contrasts in livery on the Lambos. People never seem to order them in the regular boring colours - they always have to be much more "in your face". And that's half of what makes a great supercar (in my opinion).

IMG_6944.jpg
However, when it comes to the Mustang, I don' t think yellow would be my first choice, but it actually works with the Roush bodykit on. Also - well done to the owner for getting his incredibly low Mustang up to a parking on the pavement. You're far more brave than I am.

IMG_7023.jpg
Side by side…which would you take? There’s the Nissan R35 GTR on the left, with a Porsche Cayman GT4 on the right. It’s a tough one for me to call.

IMG_7050.jpg
The McLaren 720S still looks very alien to me. Regardless, it certainly drew the most attention out of any car on display, due to the fact that there are maybe only 3 in the entire city.

And in closing

While I was running around taking photos, I encountered the two polar opposites of public reaction to a bunch of exotic metal. Firstly, a small boy very excitedly asked me what was going on with all the “loud cars”, and grinned delightfully every time an engine shrieked near redline. He was obviously having a blast.

Not even a minute later, a much older man on a bicycle passed me and remarked: “what is this? The annual small penis gathering?”.

Guess you can’t please everyone.

If there's ever one of these events but solely for JDM cars, then you know who to call

Not Ghostbusters I'm guessing?

Nice cars

Yeah, the owners have pretty good taste. I can only afford to take photos though.

Really enjoyed that great post my friend 👌
