Steel Trees in Stephen Avenue, Calgary, 🇨🇦

Back in 2013, before driving our car to the beautiful Banff and Jasper Parks, we stayed a few days in Calgary. We enjoyed walking in the city center, even though whenever we took foot in the city, we felt the Rockies already calling us from afar! Still, this must never get old living in one of these tall skyscrapers in downtown Calgary, seeing the Bow river on one side, and the Rockies on the other side.
Ah, never mind, I'm dreaming again.

So, about Calgary's city center. We found our walks to be quite enjoyable, some old buildings, some new, and many glass buildings. What we particularly liked is Stephen Avenue, a road dedicated to pedestrians, surrounded by shops, restaurants, cafés and leading to the Steel Trees near the Bankers Hall. They have been installed there to reduce wind gusts that could be caused between the Bankers Hall and other buildings.
So, just like real trees!

There are restaurants right below, so you can admire the view while enjoying delicious burgers and refreshing cold beers (speaking from experience!). Cheers! 🍺

I cant remember seeing this in Calgary, but it was 1998 when I was last there!

Seems like it was completed in 2000, according to this link:

The ten tree sculptures located north of the west tower of Bankers Hall, on Stephen Avenue, are a gift from Trizec Hahn Office Properties to the City of Calgary, made in 2000 following the completion of the second Bankers Hall office building.
Since it is difficult to grow trees in Calgary, it was decided that the ten sculptures comprised of two design types would take the form of stylized trees as conceived by the Architect.

Also, I do remember not seeing many trees indeed, except greenery on the banks of the river. I've looked up why it is difficult to grow trees in Calgary, and there is an explanation too:

Calgary was built upon a treeless plain, the northwest corner of the Great Plains of North America. This isn’t to say that that trees won’t thrive here; all it says is that naturally few trees grew here. Those that did were near a natural water source.

The urban forest we live in today is a testament to earlier generations who wanted to soften the hard glare of the summer sun and the cutting edge of the winter winds. If you plant a lot of trees and keep dumping that Bow River water on them, a prairie oasis can be built. This is really the only strategy that works here: water, water, water.

Very interesting indeed!

Its a very flat place, I distinctly remember looking from the airplane window and seeing flat plains everywhere and the Rockies in the distance to the west. Funny how some things stick in your head. There were no trees as it states above.
