STREET AND DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY: THE ZOO PARADOX

Last Sunday I decided to go to the zoo with my wife and daughter, I also decided to take my beloved old camera with me to document the artificial habitat of the animals present in that place.

The first zoos, which were no more than private collections of animals, date back to the time of Egyptian civilization. During the Middle Ages, the feudal lords used to have private collections of animals and plants as a sign of their power. During the colonization of America, the settlers brought animals and aborigines to their countries of origin to be exhibited in private collections as an exotic attraction. The first modern zoos open to the public, and where scientific studies were also carried out about botany and zoology, were opened in Europe (Vienna, 1765, Paris 1793), in 1828 in London and in 1864 in the United States (New York).

From my humble point of view, zoos are huge prisons where hundreds and thousands of innocents are deprived of their freedom without committing any crime. In my tour of the zoo I could only see sadness in the faces of the animes that are there. Seeing a lone elephant broke my heart, elephants are social animals, live in herds of many adult females and young elephants of different sexes, in addition, they are animals that migrate several times a year in search of water, none of that exists in the zoo. In that place the elephant was alone and locked in a few meters, a really sad scene.

Many animals require large spaces to carry out their daily activities of searching for food such as primates, for hunting in the case of felines or to fly in the case of birds. Not having such space can cause stress in many animals and in others it can cause muscular atrophy or obesity.

The demographic growth of the human being brings with it the need for more space for the construction of houses and lands for agriculture, causing an accelerated loss of the natural habitat of many species of flora and fauna. So here is the great paradox of zoos, perhaps in the not too distant future, that will be the only place where we could find and see many wild species of animals and plants.

It is my wish that you enjoy these images, but I wish even more that these images make you think a little about the future of our Planet, which is the home of all living beings.
