I went to check out the beaver dam on my property last week, and found the
pond had dried up. The following pictures are a sight most people don't ever get
an opportunity to .....

witness, that is the other side of a beaver dam.
We are all familiar with the wall of sticks along the dam and the lodge sticking
out of the water.
Notice the dam, mostly smooth, the mud pushed up against it.
The entrance way at the base of the lodge, a canal was dug to those entries.

This dam is about 70' across, one in Wood Buffalo National Park
is estimated at 2780' across.

A canal was also dug from the low point of the pond, for over 100 yards. It kept going
but the brush and bugs distracted me from my curiosity.

The canal feeds water to the pond, provides cover to hide, they can hold their
breath for 15 minutes, and gives them mobility when the water turns to ice, the bottom
of the canal would probably still be in liquid form.

The lodge was broken into, a young bear tore open the side.
