The haul

Let me present my two silhouette photographs below. One of them is about fishermen and the other one is famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. I am open to any criticism that will point out improvements 😉

Silhouette photographs are very unique technique to use light and dark contrast. It creates a kind of curiosity on viewer. You automatically start to imagine the missing details covered under dark. I think it is very good way of joining photographer and the viewer.

The fishing photo above is reflecting 5 guys fishing on abandoned dock. Before going in to some other aspects of silhouette technique, let me highlight some points on the picture:

  1. I was interested on up and down lines, created naturally by fishing rods. On the down side there is a guy, sitting down. But opposing to this on the high side men are standing.

  2. I waited until the sunset, to have nice background color. Also tried to avoid any ships from the view.

  3. To place the horizon line on the lower side, I took the photo very close to ground.

  4. The guy on the left most side looks a bit squeezed. It feels there is not enough room for this element. I was aware of this while cropping, but then I realized the posture. He is bending towards right, so it felt a matching condition.

  5. I really wished to catch a bird, flying just above the fishermen. It would be fantastic.

The other one is below, It has it's positives and negatives as well. It is shot by an old time mobile phone (Xperia S LT26i).

Self taught 📚

While making my research on internet to enrich my knowledge base, basically I came across two techniques on camera setting. Here I am not going to mention studio photography. It is another discipline.

There are other source of advice, very helpful on composition, focusing or lighting etc... Just to have a starting point, I can mention some of them below:

  1. lifewire
  2. CLICK IT UP A NOTCH
  3. PICTURECORRECT

Meter the bright, shoot the dark 📷

So talking about different approach on camera setting, basically they are about using your camera on auto features or manual control. We need to trick the camera in either way.

On a DSLR camera usually we have exposure lock button. So you can say to camera: "I want to use this lighting conditions, and want to focus on this area." In some advanced mobile apps you may have noticed this as well. You can use focusing and exposure pick on different areas of the view.

This auto feature is very useful. First we point our camera and focus on bright zone by half shutter pressing. Camera does metering on lighting conditions and gives feedback on settings. We lock on exposure with the special button, then move camera where ever you want to focus and shoot.

Without exposure lock, we have to point to bright zone and make half shutter again. But this time we need to remember camera settings like aperture and shutter speed. Lastly focus on the object and apply these settings. It will take some time but you know what they say: "Take the bitter with sweet." 😃

May your source be open and inventory be rich ❗
