Defense

Hello rain, I’ve been expecting you! Sooner or later ^^’

How biased are we when it comes to people we care about even to the slightest extent? Letting certain behaviors slide. Everything can be justified if we try hard enough. We turn a blind eye on facts or try and look at things and situations from more positive angles. Ignoring the red flags going off or not even noticing them. No, they would never do anything wrong on purpose. There must be some sort of reason or explanation for it. Maybe there is or maybe there isn’t. Then we go and find justification right there or simply brush it off.

When someone points out things we’ve ignored or chosen not to see, it usually leads to full defense mode. We have made up our minds even before fully assessing the situation from all sides. We emotionally invest ourselves in few people of our choice and because of that investment they become ours to protect. They are under our wing even when often times they shouldn't be or instead of our shielding we should ourselves tell them straight up where they have messed up. This way we can actually protect them from themselves and hopefully they learn something.

We all ignore things for as long as possible but sometimes they need to be raised.

Hey cryptoandcoffee! Yea sometimes they need to be raised and they aren't because of attachments, fear, emotional investment etc. Maybe not often enough.

Yes indeed... And this is just as true for beloved ideas/beliefs we like to hold on to as it is for people close to us.

How aware of your own biases are you? =) ... I find that it does help trying to keep the existence of confirmation bias in my mind all the time so that I can play devil's advocate with myself at any time, especially in times when I'm feeling passionate about something. If I'm defending an idea with more gusto than usual, my first flag goes up and I check myself. This sometimes leads people to think of me as a "fence-sitter" without convictions, but that's okay for me. I don't think having convictions is a healthy thing.

Hmm.. Thinking about it now... I do have a few convictions, it seems ;P .. But I like to think that I'd be ready to change them if new information came to light which cast their validity as good ideas into doubt. So then, can I really call them convictions?

Thank you as usual for a wonderfully thought-provoking post.
