Menagerie pond. It was built in the 1720s to keep waterfowl. According to contemporaries, there were many birds in this pond: geese, ducks, swans.

In its appearance it has an oval shape, a fence with wooden pillars, near which are placed 8 houses for birds.

The octagonal gazebo is the decoration of this pond. The author of this project remains unknown, but to this day reached archival documents that this project is made according to the drawings of Emperor Peter the great. The elegant gazebo was not just a decorative decoration of the pond - it was a place for the Emperor's conversations with diplomats during his walks in the Summer garden, and sometimes the Emperor was here alone when he wanted privacy.

After the great flood in 1786, the Menagerie was completely lost and covered with earth. So this pond only lasted less than 100 years. Several years ago, archaeological research was carried out here and scientists finally managed to restore an exact copy of this place. In 2009-2011 there were restoration works, during which it was possible to find fragments of the fence, elements of decoration, fragments of fresco painting on the ceiling of the gazebo. Now this place has become one of the favorite and most visited in the Summer Garden in St. Petersburg.

@joyrobinson, Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad that you liked the way I show some sights from Russia. Many beautiful places to visit :)

True! As the saying goes.. ”So many places to see,
so little time”

These are very precise words. I have a whole list of places I want to visit in time to share with everyone here, but it's always difficult to choose the time :)

How wonderful. I can see why the Emperor would want to spend time here. 😊

@gillianpearce, it's really nice to be here. There are always a lot of people at any time of the day.

So many lovely places you visited, as well as your photos and they're wonderful too :)

@adam-aj, Thank you for your visit and support! Now we devote all the time to walks and travel. Summer goes too fast. In winter, many of these places will be closed.

What a lovely place! 😍

Beautiful post. I love all the history with your posts. Last photo is my favorite with the flowers :)

These ceramic vases are all over the radius, they are also made as exact copies of those original vases. Thanks @steven-patrick
