Throwing Away Broken Snow Pusher + Camera Testing

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

I had a longish lunch hour today. I took a broken snow pusher to Kujala waste center, bought lunch and collected my daughter from school. I did some camera testing while at it. The pictures are completely unedited minus a little cropping here and there. [Edit at 10 PM EET: I picked aperture and shutter speed by hand and let the camera select ISO with 800 as the upper bound.]

f/5, 1/160s, ISO-140, 36 mm

DSC_0140

f/5.6, 1/160s, ISO-200, 52 mm

The difference between the above two is quite small and easy to change in editing. The thing with the dead of the winter at the 61st latitude is that there is very little light even in the middle of the day. It may not seem that way to the naked eye but you have to remember that the human eye blows a normal camera out of the water in every possible respect. Besides, your computer display is even worse than a normal DSLR camera. The higher ISO value worked slightly better.

Now for some more detailed pictures:

DSC_0135

f/7.1, 1/500s, ISO-800, 122 mm

Needlessly small aperture. The object is close and immobile. It will stay firmly in focus. The depth of field could be much narrower. Exposure time is also needlessly short. The Nikon D3400 can handle ISO-800 without too much trouble but it is always best to use a lower sensor sensitivity value.

DSC_0136

f/5.6, 1/250s, ISO-400, 95 mm

A wider aperture is better here. The only thing interesting about the picture is the broken part of the snow pusher, so a narrow depth of field is perfectly fine. Besides, there isn't even any significant practical difference between the DOF's here. Exposure time could be longer and the ISO value lower, too. Aperture (the f-value) makes a big difference in how exposed a picture will be. The rest are clearly not that important here.

DSC_0137

f/5.6, 1/250s, ISO-640, 170 mm

Again, aperture is appropriately wide here. Exposure time could be longer and the ISO-value lower but I don't think this picture could be improved significantly. The only thing interesting about it is the how the pusher is broken. The picture very clearly fulfills its purpose.

Good riddance, snow pusher! Thank you for your service!

f/5.6, 1/160, ISO-800, 30 mm

This picture is perfectly fine despite some people always preferring to use very low ISO values.
