Amsterdam’s Red Light District Part 1

in #photography6 years ago

Amsterdam is well known for its Red Light District. There is nothing to skirt around about this area, it is exactly what it is. An area filled with sex shops, brothels and anything sex related. There may be a reputation attached to this part of Amsterdam that perceives it to be a seedy and nefarious place of dealings. This is not the case however, the RLD carries a welcoming atmosphere and for the most part is safe if the correct etiquettes are followed.

Arriving at the RLD is an experience in itself. One might not know what to expect here, the red lights really set the tone for what this place is all about. Prostitution is perceived with a liberal view and just like any profession, services are to be honoured as people make a living and customers enjoy themselves. Whether it’s smoking some pot or paying for some naughty services, Amsterdam really carries a chilled approach to what they call ‘human nature’. There are no criminals here, everything is legal and within what is permissible by law.

The Museum of Prostitution was one of the first I visited here in the RLD. It is a most interesting guide and insight into the prostitution industry. This is a historic profession and gives visitors the chance to understand what it feels like to be in the light. The perspective communicated here was excellent. The entry was not expensive but it was certainly busy, there were many people walking around and to no surprise not a minor in sight, this is no place for kids.

The staff were lovely and it was interesting to listen about some of the stories the exhibit hosted. Understanding the dangers that women face on a daily basis was an eye opening experience for me. Working girls put much at risk for their livelihood and are diligent workers who have some of the strongest mind sets I have come to learn about.

Further wondering through the RLD, there are lots to be seen. There are visitors from all over the world here. Some simply wanting to see as an experience, others looking for the services on offer. I looked to the women in the windows and realised this was the first time I had seen such a display. Everyone is friendly, seductive and there is perhaps a niche to fit the taste of anyone wondering these streets. An interesting part of Amsterdam I had longed to see, and there was so much more to explore!
