Off to Newcastle!

If you haven't already guessed already (and that would be quite difficult unless you've been here before), this is Newcastle's railway station. My visit to the north of England allowed me to visit the lovely town of York but it's time to make a visit to this city just under 100 miles to the north. Taking a train is probably the easiest method although according to my friend, the A1 motorway is also only about half an hour slower than the train and might be an option if you want to see some of the lovely northern countryside of Britain.

Arriving in Newcastle, I suddenly felt alienated by the accent once again. I couldn't really understand anything at first, and to be honest, the situation didn't improve much over the course of my stay.

The train station itself was very large, very grand. I've noticed a lot of the main rail stations for bigger cities tend to have the same kind of design. Long bright roof lines with large roman numeral clocks. Most of the London stations have actually replaced their timings with digital time dashboards and the analogue clocks are just for visual effect, but I like these small details because they remind me a lot of things like the Harry Potter movie.

This is the Cathedral Church of St Mary. It's one of the more protruding buildings of Newcastle which is situated on Clayton Street. Built in 1842, the church is just one of the examples of the gothic style architecture present in Newcastle. Amazingly, it is also the fifth tallest structure in Newcastle which is quite the feat given it was built well over 100 years ago!

Shortly after visiting the Cathedral and a little walk around town centre, it was time to kick back to some relaxation at our hotel. Travelling through the north has taken it's toll on my energy reserves because so much of the touring is actually walking around. Even sitting down for hours and hours can get tiring!

There are lots of hotels which you can get a room for on arrival and that is exactly what we decided to do. We used google maps to point us in the direction of hotels and simply walked there to check them out. This one seemed like a quite good one with some modern decor so we decided to stay here for the night.

Another factor was that it had quite an appealing bar with some locally produced malt whisky's.

And here they are in their quite beautiful glass bottles. Apparently Whisky is quite a thing in Newcastle with a festival dedicated to it each year. Drinking culture has only seemed to become more prominent as we move up north. Maybe it has something to do with the colder climate?
