Ciao a tutti,

Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!

Massafra is a town in the province of Taranto, in the Southern Italian region of Puglia. Situated on the Murgia plateau of Taranto, Massafra is also known by the name of Tebaide d’Italia, due to numerous Rupestrian settlements present in the Karst formation caves throughout the territory.

The town was founded in the 6th century AD by a group of refugees called Afri, who were granted by the bishop of Taranto a "Massa" that is a very wide expanse of land, situated between the two canyons called Madonna della Scala and San Marco. However archaeological findings show also traces of Neolithic settlements and items of Messapian origin (5th century BC) as demonstrated by the Dolmen of Accetta and during the entire Bronze Age.

After an initial Byzantine period (6th Century), the City became a Longobard settlement (7th Century) and seat of a “Gastaldato” (administrative office of the Reign).
During the 10th Century, the suburb became part of a conflict between the Byzantines and the Longobards, which concluded only with the rise of Norman power. In this period, there were also frequent Saracen raids over the entire territory of Puglia.
During 1085, it was the Norman Riccardo Senescalco, a noble of Massafra, who ordered that the City be fortified and the Castle built. This castle was subsequently often frequented by the Swabian Emperor, Federick II and Bianca Lancia, mother of the future King Manfredi.

In 1269 passed under Charles of Anjou and was united to the Principato of Taranto.
In 1484 it was occupied by the Aragonese army, and Antonio Pisciello was made Baron of the town. In 1497 it was sacked by the French troops of Charles VIII then passed under the Neapolitan Artusio Pappacoda, whose family ruled until 1633, when the feudal rights were purchased by the Carmignano family. 50 years later it came under the Marquis of Oria and Francavilla, and Marquis Michele II promoted agriculture planting olive and fruit trees, and greatly embellished the town renovating the Castle and building the Monastery of St Benedict and the Clock Tower, commissioning works to the best architects and artists of Apulia.

Right at the foot of the ravine stands a castle, whose first-laid stones were placed around 970 B.C, and was then later completed by the Angevins and the Aragons with a distinguishing characteristic; a great octagonal tower that even today dominates the panorama of anyone who looks up from the Appian road towards the town clinging to the hill.

In the Massafra ravine stands the Sanctuary of Madonna della Scala, built around 1791 on the site of the apparition of Our Lady together with Baby Jesus and a fawn, to some local shepherds.
A visit to the caves should definitely not be missed, as they contain an uninterrupted testimony from Neolithic to Byzantine eras. The most important are the Candelora, S. Anthony and S. Leonardo crypts.

Among the more interesting religious buildings: the S. Lucia Church, the Baroque San Benedetto Church, the Mother Church, a classical architectural example from the sixteenth century, the seventeenth century Cappuccini Convent and lastly the Church of Santi Medici.

Massafra also holds one of the longest-running, and most appealing of Carnivals in Italy (the first edition goes back to 1953), a real street party that involves young and old and that attracts thousands of tourists

Thing to see: the Historical center, the Castle, the Sanctuary of Madonna della Scala, the Mother Church, the Candelora, S. Anthony and S. Leonardo crypts, the S. Lucia Church, the San Benedetto Church, the Cappuccini Convent, the Church of Santi Medici, the Gravina di San Marco
