Flamingos at the Vermont Salt Pan. Hermanus, South Africa
Reckoned as one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Songs and poems are written about them!
A good friend told me about this place during our visit to watch the cavorting of the Southern Blue Humpback whales and she said that we simply have to visit this place. Hermanus is about 40 kilometers from our place and we drove out again to go to the Salt pan. Can you believe that a year ago this dam was absolutely empty and dry.
And look now after a bit of rain.
Beautiful isn't it?
Birds, birds, all over the place! This is not the same flying flamingo in the previous photo!
Similar to sheep, they all gather and move in the same direction!
A closer look at a rock behind the flamingos reveal some nesting White Chested Cormorants!
This is a public sign at the salt pan that was placed by the local municipality.
And finally, this is a close up of a picture on the sign. Looks like a great painting doesn't it?
To all international whale watchers that visit Hermanus during the annual Whale Festival, make sure that your next visit includes the Vermont Salt Pan. It is certainly one of the greatest shows of water birdlife that I have ever seen.
There are also many other bird species on the dam, but of course the flamingos steal the show!
