4th of July Fireworks
4th of July Fireworks
Today here in the US we celebrated Independence Day or as we call it the Fourth of July. When I was growing up it was always celebrated on July 4. But sometime later our politicians thought that it would be great if our holidays were observed on the closest Monday to the actual holiday, that way every one could get an extra long weekend to celebrate. That worked fine for some of the holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, Presidents Day, but not so much for ones like Christmas, New Years or the 4th of July! So after a few years the 4th of July was moved back to being celebrated on July 4 like it should be.
Wait! Not so fast. One of the big parts of 4th of July celebration is fireworks. Again, when I was growing up fireworks were always on July 4. However, when the day of the week stuff happened, the fireworks didn't stay in-sync with the observed day. So now you never know! Just sometime close to July 4 there should be fireworks!
So, the campground where we are staying put on their fireworks display last night (July 3). This was great for me. There was no crowd to deal with, no traffic or parking issues, it was just a short walk up to the field were it was all happening. I was also pretty excited about being able to get some unobstructed photos of the action.
I did a little researched for the optimal camera settings for the job. Here's my setup:
Category | fireworks |
Settings | f/11.0 8.0 mm ISO 200 |
Camera | Canon 60D |
Lens | Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye CS II |
Location | Lee, New Hampshire |
I used my manual focus fisheye lens to get a full view of the sky. I also used a tripod, a remote shutter release and set my camera on bulb.
Here are a few of my photos from last night. Exposure times are as noted.

Capturing some great shots of the fireworks and glad you can share the 4th of July with us that don't celebrate it. Though each country does have a bunch of their own holidays.
