The Carob Tree - chocolate substitute and natural medicine

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

The Carob Tree - Ceratonia siliqu; known as algarroba in Spanish and also St Johns Bread, produces a dark brown pod that grows between 6-12 inches long. The pods contain pulp and small seeds that are powdered and used as a substitute and healthier alternative to cocoa. The pods are harvested in the autumn and can be used fresh or dried.

The trees are single sex so are grown in groups and one male can fertilize up to 20 surrounding females.
The pods have been prescribed to singers - as a tonic for sore throats and strengthening to vocal chords. Unlike chocolate, carob is caffeine free and contains twice as much calcium and is fat free.

It is a great source of nutrition containing a variety of vitamins ( A, B, B2 and B3 and has numerous minerals, protein, fiber, sodium and carbohydrate. The vitamins make it great for healthy skin and eye health. Carob is beneficial to the digestive system, having a detoxifying action and preventing the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines.

Having a similar flavour to chocolate it is considered a healthy alternative, particularly for diabetics and people wanting to lose weight. It reduces the risk of heart disease and lowers cholesterol.

The trees are drought tolerant and the leaves are somewhat fire resistant making them useful if planted to act as fire breakers.

I have never tried, although I have seen biscuits and cakes made with carob. Carob flour is available in our shops and I will get some next time.
