School in China

When kids go to school they will often get up pretty early and have lengthy day of study. Chinese students will spend most of their day at the educational establishment, absorbing knowledge and getting their dose of extracurricular activities. Typically, a child may wake up around seven in the morning to prepare for their daily rituals before attending school. This will of course vary depending on other commitments and distance from school. This routine is instilled into a child from early on and the standard school hours will commence at 8am and conclude around 3pm. Despite this early start, there is perhaps a major difference in the way break times are structured. To recharge their batteries, children are given an hour and a half to eat their meals and even rest before the next part of the day.

Lunch time is therefore a defining part of the day as it hold presence in length and meaning when splitting up the morning and afternoon learning sessions. Many parts of the world will vary in terms of lunch time activities and of course, the diet requirements will also be vastly different. Lunchtime is the moment many look forward to as breakfast has long gone and appetite begins to set in. So many may wonder, how different is a Chinese school canteen lunch compared to different parts of the world. I think in general, different countries will differ greatly. In Asia alone, the school diet will vary greatly.

In china, a school menu is specifically designed for a balanced approach to nutrition. This actually is a deep reflection of traditional Chinese cuisine. It’s not uncommon for a child to use the time they have to go home and eat with their family. However, in the bust life of many the school canteen is the next choice for nourishment. Food is served on serving dished to allow children to easily manage their food. There will always be a mixture of vegetables, fibre, meats and carbohydrates to give that extra bit of energy. The meals tend to be varied from day to day and will even feature some more exotic servings and soups. There will be the odd day however where things get a little relaxed and kids will be able to enjoy some treats such as western style chicken or even hotdogs.
