I was fascinated to learn about the historical currencies of Tibet as I explored various museums and read through books. Pre dating the era of coined currency, trade and bartering was the foundation of exchange in the country. Gold, valuable stones and other precious materials were often used in exchanges. The country would later see the discovery of coins during the 17th century when Nepal would introduce the first supply of silver coins into Tibet. Efforts would continue as the currency was introduced and eventual mass production would come to realisation when Tibet and China would cooperate. Silver and Copper coins would eventually find their role as currency in the early years but this would eventually evolve into the current bank note system.

The currency being used today in Tibet is the Renminbi Yuan, the official currency of China. This made travelling for me much more convenient of course as there was no need to exchange money but I have been getting used to the cashless ways of China, most of the shops would only deal in cash which wasn’t much of an issue. I thought for a moment how life would be if I were born in the past. Transacting and bartering may have been an exciting skill to master and is interesting to look into the historic way of trading.
