Foundry at the Train Machine Shop

in #photography6 years ago

Here is the Foundry at the Northern Nevada Railway Museum. It is hidden in the back of the machine shop. Most people don't even realize that it is there. There are no tours. You just have to be adventurous and know what you are seeing.

This foundry mainly made train wheels and parts.

This is a massive steam forging hammer. look in the background, there are forging tools to hold the hot iron while it is being beaten by the forging hammer. some of those tools had to have taken two people just to lift the tool. I can just imagine that to work here required the workers to be massive. Size matters.

At first you would think who in their right mind would hang those huge train wheels and gears from the wall or from those wire hooks. But they are not made from iron. They are made from wood. They are actually blanks to make sand molds so that the foundry can pour molten iron into the sand cast and make new wheels and gears.

Take a look at these massive forge furnaces. This must have been a very hot place to work.
