Full Spectrum Long Exposure Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography #7: Leatherleaf Mahonia Part 1

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

The Leatherleaf is a Holly like plant and produces flowers in late winter. Around me its one of the only plants flowering in the early spring. And due to this, the pollinators love it. Eventually knocking off all the flowers, it seems due to how busy they are on the plant.

Before the Bees got to it, I took a cutting and brought it into my room for doing some blacklight photography. My long time followers has seen this photography from me before. And I am glad to bring some new flowers for this kind of photo technique. Using my macro lens and my full spectrum camera, I capture colors and textures that are otherwise unseen.

The grouping of these buds and flowers slowly change as we travel down the stem.

Some of the unopened flowers can be seen on top of this sample. With a deep blue/purple color when the blacklight is shined on the buds.

Most of the flowers opened by the time I took a cutting, and they are very small flowers. Holding this sample is a twisty tie thats been doubled over.

Usually I tape these to my structure for photography but since this is so small I needed to make a new rig.

I peeled back some smaller stems to make room to attach the twisty tie, and you can see sap coming out from the broken off and cut parts of the stem.

Sometimes this sap will drip and make little dots of fluorescent colors on whats below.

I have some more photos, close ups of the flowers coming soon. It will be in part two of this scene.

If you would like to see what this flower looks like in normal light, take a look at my recent Bee posts. I have a blog with close ups of the bees on the flowers. You can also find photography of this flower by searching on google for Mahonia: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=mahonia

I take pictures with a special camera. Its a Mirrorless DSLR that has been modified by Life Pixel to see light in other wavelengths. This allows my camera to see light in the Infrared [IR] around 1300 NM wavelength, through the visual spectrum and into the Ultraviolet A and B wavelengths roughly into the 300 NM wavelength.

I carry many filters on me to make the photos you see in my blog, these filters screw on my lens and help me isolate certain wavelengths for certain scenes. These filters can be IR / UV pass-through filters to assist me get a natural photo taking out the UV and IR light. Or I may use a Infrared pass-through filter capture just IR light. I can do the same with UV light as well, though I need some better filters which they can cost a few hundred dollars for true Ultraviolet pass through filters. So for right now I have B + W 403 bandpass filters that still allow some IR light in, due to their cheaper material.

There are also exotic glasses made of sapphire and germanium I am open to working with to replace my silica glass hot mirror with a material that allows even longer wavelengths of infrared to enter my cameras sensor. Special sensors, lenses and filters of that material would be needed as well, so it would be a big project but one that may give some even more unique photography results.

Addresses below to help me buy better camera equipment and support me to travel to locations to do photo and video and overall great blogs in new places. I would be happy to list some of the contributors in my posts for donations that help me along the way.
