Cats in Emergency

Emergency situations are stressful times for both cats and owners. This is a true test of how one has prepared for these events and how they react in a moment of panic. Staying calm and collected is what all owners should strive for when an injury has occurred, isolating the situation is key to prevent any further mishaps or injury aggravation. Getting hold of an injured cat isn’t always easy but a calm and collected approach to gently secure the cat without damaging its injured area will help manage things safely. Having a pet carrier on hand is recommended for transportation, if not available a box and blanket will suffice. In some instances a cat may be unconscious or incapacitated to some degree. Appropriate measures should be taken to ensure that no blocked passages can occur from vomit or blood that may come up.

Open wounds that are gushing blood need immediate attention. Calmly apply a bandage with light pressure to stop the bleeding the wounded area, if the wound is within an area that is not easily bandage, manual pressure may be applied by hand. Understanding what a cat is suffering from is important. Bleeding is one of the possible indications of injuries. There may also be other signs of damage, for instance a cat that is struggling to breathe will audibly do so. A check to test its breathing is recommended under any such situation. A visual inspection of its air passage by looking in the mouth will be the first step in understanding what is hampering its condition. Adequate light should be provided for this task and if possible, a sterile pair of tweezers can be used to remove any visible obstruction. A cat will be very sensitive in this situation and may want to chomp down. A second pair of hands is desirable in this situation to secure the jaw while treatment is being given. Any complicated situations and brittle objects that have been swallowed should be dealt with by a professional vet.

Inspecting a cats sensitive areas and especially its eyes and ears is important. Blockages caused by debris such as dirt, sand and other fine particles may be dislodged using drops drop for the eyes or even oil around the ears. Scolding should be treated immediately and is a grave cause for concern.
