Melnik - the museum in which people live

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

In Bulgaria, many small towns with the status of "reserve". Simply put, these are museums, but people live there. Because they always lived there.

One of these towns - Melnik. It is located only 170 kilometers from Sofia in the direction of Sandanski - a famous spa resort. And next to Melnik there is Rupite - the place where Vang lived and hosted. Thus, all the tourists who go to the monastery Vanga fall in Melnik. Melnik is full of restaurants and hotels, despite the fact that the whole city consists of one long street, and only 325 people live here.

In general, Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria.

Accurate information about the occurrence of Melnik has not yet been discovered. The earliest mention of this settlement dates back to 864, but Bulgarian scientists assume that people here began to live much earlier. In those years, it was a fortress on the southern Bulgarian borders.

The town is located 22 kilometers from Sandanski at an altitude of 437 meters above sea level against the background of wonderful chalk cliffs. The influence of the Mediterranean climate prevails in this area, and therefore kiwi and pomegranates grow.

Melnik is famous for its wines, which you can try in restaurants, and then go out and buy home the same thing in large bottles.

In the Middle Ages, the future Byzantine emperor Mikhail Paleolog was appointed governor of Melnik.

Melnik is generally known as the cradle of several clans of Byzantine aristocrats. Some of their mansions, even turning into ruins, still adorn the city.

In Melnik, the Greek population always prevailed, but in 1013 most of them left the city along with the Greek troops, according to the Treaty of Bucharest.

In 1968, the town was declared an architectural reserve and included in the hundreds of national tourist sites required to visit.

Here you can see Korpopulov kashyu (house), Pashovat kyushchu, Melnishku fortress, or rather what is left of it, Melnishki rock pyramids and a couple of museums.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Is amazing how much history those walls have... I wonder how many eyes have stared at the horizon from the windows of that houses...how many generations have lived and died on that single spot... it humbles me and makes me think about how brief is our lifetime...

Thank for sharing, best regards.
