One day in my life as a hobbyist photographer

I woke up today and saw some beautiful clouds in the sky and I said to myself that It would be a very good day to take some photos even if the sun was already up at 07:30. If you follow my blog you know that I kind of have a passion for the Vacaresti Delta from Bucharest and as I live very close to the site I always go there to relax and experiment with photography.

It was freezing cold as I entered the Natural Protected Site. I was all alone in the wilderness :) It was kind of scary at first because I didnt realize that actually there is no obvious danger lying around. What could go wrong ? But hay, lucky me I stumbled upon another fellow photographer and I was relived that I am not the only crazy guy looking for some shots :)

So let me tell you about my ritual when shooting photography. When I shoot outside I almost always set the camera on the A mode ( Aperture priority mode ) It is an automatic mode where you only have to set the aperture and the camera takes care of the rest of the parameters like ISO and shutter speed. Being a perfectionist by nature and when I first started to learn about photography I was ONLY shooting in Manual Mode because everyone was saying that this is the only way profesionals shoot so if you want to become one you must really do that.

Well, after I started missing shots, overexposing, underexposing badly or blurring because of wrong shutter speeds I decided to give the automatic modes a try. It was a godsend, I was relieved, I could focus on the action and not the settings, I was there to capture and enjoy photography. Long story short, as I ended up finding later, every professional uses automatic modes when shooting outdoors at least. In the studio there is another story :)

Back to my photo day. I took my nikkor 24-120mm and my only telephoto ( the poor`s guy telephoto ) nikkor 70-300mm as I always do. I look around carefully and try to find interesting subject, observe the light and shadows, experiment with angles and so on.

As I arrived at the birds observatory I noticed the lake being frozen and some some wired shapes like some stones on the ice. I could not understand what those things were because of the sun hitting me straight in the face. I climbed the stairs of the observatory and I immediately realized that there was a swan family sleeping on the frozen lake while circling a hole in the ice.

I took a moment to change my lens with the telephoto to capture the swans properly- not quite recommended to change the lens in the freezing cold but... I took a few shots and suddenly I noticed, in the distance, a silhouette in the middle of the lake. I focused and realized it was a fox because of the way it moved and its huge tail.

I was super excited that I got the chance to photograph a fox in Bucharest...who knew ? The appearance lasted just shy of 5 seconds. The fox stopped and stared at the swans. they woke up and stared back and then the fox left resigned that it wont have the chance to get his paws on a big chunk of meat.

Because it all happened so fast I realized that I missed the opportunity to take a wider shot that could tell the story without me describing it but that is photography, It happens in a split second and If you are not ready It wont forgive you. I tried to reframe the composition and waited in vain for the fox to come back but it didnt. Nevertheless I am happy with the result and I think I can compose a shot with both the fox and the swans in the same frame.

Moving on I walked away very pleased but still curious about where to find the fox den and instead of heading home I decided to take more pictures. I once again crossed roads with my fellow photographer that told me that I was very lucky to capture the fox because he comes here every week to photograph the birds and he only saw it once last year.

He showed me some paths trough the reeds and I boldly followed them. I arrived on the other side of the lake and found myself another family of swans with its babies. They were super funny because they were walking slowly an trying to keep their balance on the thin ice.

I even found the foxes trails and even tryed to follow it but I ended up in a dead end so better luck next time :)

I actually ,without even noticing, crossed the whole park and arrived at some factory furnaces that were producing a thick smoke. In the distance I spotted a man running and It looked cool framed with the polluting furnaces. Trying to be healthy in this town might not be the healthiest thing :)

The sun was quite up and I was still freezing so I decided to go home but all of a sudden the sky roared and these planes made their appearance.

Its 1st of December, the national day of Romania, everybody is at the parade and I am alone with my camera enjoying the beauty of Bucharest wilderness.
Today I took about 500 shots and just a few are decent for editing and very few make it to my favorite list :). Of course, editing is another story and it takes a lot of time and effort but I am passionate about what I do so I am not complaining...ok, maybe my back is :)
As you can see you can take quite a lot of interesting shots every time you go outside. I went out in the morning to shoot some clouds and I ended up with anything but clouds :). Every day is special, just cherish it and go out, you might be surprised at every step ! Enjoy Life.

Oh maaan that runner with tat huge chimney is the best one. I also liked the fox you've used as the preview pic as well. Do you upload also on shutterstock? What's you ID over there? Haha I believe the freezing must have been indeed bad as you mentioned. Poor nikkor :D

I have to admit that the one with the runner is my favorite ! I did upload some time ago on shutterstock and think about doing it again. I dont have anything fresh there. I have tried my luck recently with stocksy but I did not get in. I succeded at CavanImages but I was to lazy at the moment to upload :)

Haha that's the thing with many guys I know. Their pictures are absolute fire but they just don't upload cuz they don't feel like. So when's the next photosession of yours planned for? :D

Actualy I was thinking to go today but I got up late cuz all the beers last night so I might be a little dizzy in the field :)). I have just 150 pictuers on shutterstock but just two or three sell consistently like a few times a month :))) I make a huge amount like 2-4 dollars a month. I have to have so many good pictures to get at least a decent amount. So I guess the begining of thios year I will star reuploading :)

Two photos had caught my attention: that one with the fox you used as the illustration for the article, and that with runner and the furnace. Those two alone are Curie-worthy. Congrats! :)

Thank you very much ! The one with the runner it is kind of spectacular because of the huge size difference indeed and it is also my favourite

Being able to go out anytime and practice the hobby of photography is one of my dreams. I liked the way you captured the beauty of the winter in Bucharest. Congrats on the Curie upvote!

I am quite honored to get the chance to be featured in the Author Showcase. I dont quite have the time to talk about myself right now but all I can say is that I am a hobbyist photographer that wants to grow and I discovered that I can grow only if I practice, practice, practice. Go out, shoot, go home, Edit. Simple and repetitive workflow will get you to great results. I do that for almost a year now and my photography skills are getting stronger and stronger as you can see from my blog. Thank you again very much for the nomination and for supporting quality content on steemit !

What a gorgeous series of shots all so beautiful

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed them !

Photos like these reminds me how perspectives really matter and differ for each person. I did like this part.

Well, after I started missing shots, overexposing, underexposing badly or blurring because of wrong shutter speeds I decided to give the automatic modes a try. It was a godsend, I was relieved, I could focus on the action and not the settings, I was there to capture and enjoy photography.

Which is the core thing about being passionate and good at what you do best. Those technical stuff can come second and not a single photo here looks bad at all.

Spot on ! Thank you very much and I am so glad you enjoyed the photos !!!

I always admire people who can take around 200-500 shots at once. When I was searching advises for the young amateur photographers, I heard that it is more important to think what do you want to show on the picture instead of falling into some crazy photographic berserk. But anyway, if you won't take thousand of photos, how otherwise you would learn all the techniques ? Great solution with A mode ( Aperture priority mode ), I will try it today !
Good post and I love the photo with chimney and foxes ! Greetings

From my experience in the field, I tend to take several shots of the same composition because you cannot see if you have properly focused and many other details. It happened to take just one or two shots of the same composition and when I got home they were out of focus...So its kind of my backup plan. Well I am not shooting in burst mode to flood my card :) Thank you and I am glad I could help ! See you around !

Thank you for sharing such beautiful pictures with us, it is amazing that you decided to spend the whole day hunting for good shots, like the pictures with frozen plants, that must be really early morning till sunrise, normally once there are first rays on the plants the snow melts and snow turns to water quickly. The little family on water surface look very peaceful and enjoying their morning. I like the picture of that fox, how he is trying to see if there is anything for him to catch, also the second picture like he noticed you and just looking to your direction. You are lucky to have been able to do such shots. One of the common feature of morning hours is a jogger, they must have a strong will ro go and run no matter what the weather is there. Great day, I really enjoyed it.

Thank you so much ! I was really lucky with the fox shot but, hey, you make your own luck :)) I am really glad that you enjoyed my photos !

I always, or at least most of the time, shoot in auto mode because as a hobbyist I do not really understand the settings of my camera. Or maybe, I chose to ignore understanding them. 😀

You got great shots there. I specially like the fourth and fifth photos. Or more over, the fourth one. The dew drops were perfectly captured and makes the photo look so cool.

It is clever of you to choose the unbeaten path and go taking photos in the wilderness while others are busy celebrating Romania day with a parade. It was all worth it though. Thanks for sharing your photos!

Thank you very much @macoolette ! I have found out that sometimes the action happens when no one is around so I try to stay out of the crowds in searching for interesting subjects.

I have found out that sometimes the action happens when no one is around so I try to stay out of the crowds

I agree. There were times when I wanted to just go the opposite direction as I feel I could gain more that is something new rather than joining the crowd and juggle for a piece of the pie.

Winter is coming.
Snow is coming.
Cold is coming.
Nature and the animals know It.
Great photos with beautiful colours!!!👍
