Но, оказывается, в таком образе её можно увидеть только в том случае, когда рыба-ёж напугана. Все рыбы-ежи неторопливы, у них нет шанса ловко ускользнуть от хищников. Поэтому при виде опасности рыба-ёж раздувается до формы шара, иголки оттопыриваются. Проглотить такой колючий шар не только сложно, но и смертельно опасно. Иглы ранят пищевод хищника, а в коже и печени рыбы-ежа содержится смертельный яд.
