The physical properties of the ZrPt compound with C interstitial doping in hexagonal D88 crystalline structure was investigated. Results show significant differences in the x-ray photoelectron spectra related to the Pt orbitals, with 5d-3d hybridizations, indicating a possible new group of superconductors. This becomes evident from examination of the previously unreported signature of unconventional superconductivity and stronger electronic correlations in ZrPtC compounds. Macroscopic measurements as specific heat at low temperature reveal a bulk superconducting transition close to 7 K with very high electronic contribution, which corroborates with the expressive value of calculated density state. In fact, signatures of unconventional superconductivity are observed for lower and upper critical field diagrams. The anomalous electrical resistivity is observed in the normal state with signatures of strong electron-electron interaction. Calculations of the electronic structure of ZrPt show a complex Fermi surface with high density of states.

We show that the interplay between antiferromagnetic interaction and hole motion gives rise to a topological superconducting phase. This is captured by the one dimensional anisotropic model which can be experimentally achieved with ultracold polar molecules trapped onto an optical lattice. As a function of the anisotropy strength we find that different quantum phases appear, ranging from a gapless Luttinger liquid to spin gapped conducting and superconducting regimes. In presence of appropriate -anisotropy, we also prove that a phase characterized by non-trivial topological order takes place. The latter is described uniquely by a finite non local string parameter and presents robust edge spin fractionalization. These results allow to explore quantum phases of matter where topological superconductivity is induced by the interaction.

Charge density waves are a common occurrence in all families of high critical temperature superconducting cuprates. Although consistently observed in the underdoped region of the phase diagram and at relatively low temperatures, it is still unclear to what extent they influence the unusual properties of these systems. Using resonant x-ray scattering we carefully determined the temperature dependence of charge density modulations in (Y,Nd)BaCuO for three doping levels. We discovered short-range dynamical charge density fluctuations besides the previously known quasi-critical charge density waves. They persist up to well above the pseudogap temperature T*, are characterized by energies of few meV and pervade a large area of the phase diagram, so that they can play a key role in shaping the peculiar normal-state properties of cuprates.

Superconductivity from repulsion: Variational results for the 2D Hubbard model in the limit of weak interaction (1809.04916v1)

Dionys Baeriswyl

The two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied for small values of the interaction strength (U of the order of the hopping amplitude t), using a variational ansatz well suited for this regime. The wave function, a refined Gutzwiller ansatz, has a BCS mean-field state with d-wave symmetry as its reference state. Superconducting order is found for densities n <1 (but not for n=1). This resolves a discrepancy between results obtained with the functional renormalization group, which do predict superconducting order for small values of U, and numerical simulations, which did not find superconductivity for U<4t. Both the gap parameter and the order parameter have a dome-like shape as a function of n with a maximum for n about 0.8. Expectation values for the energy, the particle number and the superconducting order parameter are calculated using a linked-cluster expansion up to second order in U. In this way large systems (millions of sites) can be readily treated and well converged results are obtained. The gap parameter exhibits an intriguing power-law increase as a function of U. Finite-size effects are very important for LxL lattices with L<100, in agreement with Anderson's criterion for the minimum size of a superconductor, but even for 100<L<300 irregularities persist because the level spacing at the Fermi energy (the HOMO-LUMO gap) fluctuates as a function of L for the tight-binding band structure.

The search for unconventional superconductivity in Weyl semimetal materials is currently an exciting pursuit, since such superconducting phases could potentially be topologically nontrivial and host exotic Majorana modes. The layered material TaIrTe4 is a newly predicted time-reversal invariant type II Weyl semimetal with minimum Weyl points. Here, by a systematical study based on electrical transport measurements at ultralow temperature and in ultrahigh magnetic field, we discover that TaIrTe4 crystals exhibit quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) superconductivity with an onset transition temperature (Tc) up to 1.54 K, and show strong Shubnikov de Haas quantum oscillations. The normalized upper critical field h*(T/Tc) behavior indicates that the discovered superconductivity is unconventional with the p-wave pairing. The superconductivity is observed to be uniform on the sample surface with a V-shaped superconducting gap by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The STS further visualizes Fermi arc surface states that are consistent with the previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results. Both the transport and STS measurements reveal that the superconductivity occurs in the surface states and exhibits the quasi-1D features. Our results suggest that TaIrTe4 is a promising platform to explore topological superconductivity.

Majorana bound states in magnetic impurity chains: effects of -wave pairing (1809.04911v1)

We consider an atomic chain of magnetic impurities on the surface of a spin-orbit coupled superconductor with a dominating -wave and sub-dominating -wave order parameters. In particular, we investigate the properties of the Majorana bound states (MBSs) emerging at the chain end points in the topological phase and how MBSs are affected by the -wave order parameter. We provide a comprehensive picture by both studying time-reversal invariant and breaking superconducting substrates as well as chains oriented in different directions relative to the -wave rotation. We show that increasing the -wave order parameter significantly enhances the localization of MBSs and their protective mini-gap, as long as the direction along which the impurity chain is oriented does not cross any nodal lines of the gap function. Moreover, we find an extra gap-closing for a specific condensate and chain orientation within the topological phase, which we are able to attribute to simple geometrical effects in the corresponding two-dimensional limit. These results show how high-temperature -wave superconductors can be used to significantly enhance the properties and stability of MBSs.

Impurity Effects in Nodal Extended - and Nodeless -Wave Superconductors: Gap Symmetry of BiS-Based Layered Superconductors (1809.04825v1)

Akihiro Ichikawa, Takashi Hotta

2018-09-13

In BiS-based layered superconductors, the existence of gap nodes on Fermi-surface curves has been suggested from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, whereas the conventional -wave gap has been proposed from measurements of superfluid density and thermal conductivity. To reconcile these two distinct experimental results of the gap node, we investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects in the superconductor with a disconnected pocketlike Fermi-surface structure. Then, we claim that the seemingly contradictory situation concerning the gap node is resolved by a concept of dirty nodal extended -wave superconductivity. Provided that it is unnecessary to consider the nodes of the gap, at first glance, the conventional -wave gap seems to be a unique solution, but in the pocketlike Fermi-surface topology, a nontrivial possibility of a nodeless -wave superconductor is pointed out. To clarify the gap symmetry, we propose to perform experiments on nuclear magnetic relaxation rate in BiS-based layered superconductors.

Induced -wave pairing in Bose-Fermi mixtures (1809.04812v1)

Cooper pairing caused by an induced interaction represents a paradigm in our description of fermionic superfluidity. Here, we present a strong coupling theory for the critical temperature of -wave pairing between spin polarised fermions immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The fermions interact via the exchange of phonons in the condensate, and our self-consistent theory takes into account the full frequency/momentum dependence of the resulting induced interaction. We demonstrate that both retardation and self-energy effects are important for obtaining a reliable value of the critical temperature. Focusing on experimentally relevant systems, we perform a systematic analysis varying the boson-boson and boson-fermion interaction strength as well as their masses, and identify the most suitable system for realising a -wave superfluid. Our results show that such a superfluid indeed is experimentally within reach using light bosons mixed with heavy fermions.

Here we report the synthesis and superconductivity of a novel ternary compound LaPd2Bi2. Shiny plate-like single crystals of LaPd2Bi2 were first synthesized by high-temperature solution method with PdBi flux. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that LaPd2Bi2 belongs to the primitive tetragonal CaBe2Ge2-type structure with the space group P4/nmm (No. 129), and the refined lattice parameters are a = 4.717(2) {\AA}, c = 9.957(3) {\AA}. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that LaPd2Bi2 undergoes a superconducting transition at 2.83 K and exhibits the characteristics of type-II superconductivity. The discovery of superconductivity in LaPd2Bi2 with CaBe2Ge2-type structure may help to further understand the possible relationship between the occurrence of superconductivity and the crystal structures in 122-type materials.

Topological superconductors are in the focus of research because of their high potential for future applications of quantum computation. With the recent discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which exhibits the conductive quantum Hall edge states without external magnetic field, it becomes possible to create a novel topological superconductor by introducing superconductivity into these edge states. In this case, two distinct topological superconducting phases with one or two chiral Majorana edge modes formed, characterized by Chern numbers (N ) of 1 and 2, respectively. Recent experiments on a QAHI / superconductor (SC) heterostructure revealed the presence of integer and half-integer quantized plateaus in the conductance over a deposited SC strip and presented the quantization evidence of these states. However, these results also provoked a few controversies and thus additional direct evidence of a superconducting origin is urgently needed. We provided spectroscopic evidence for a superconducting QAHI state using nano-point contacts at the edge of a QAHI / SC heterostructure and obtained unique signatures of these two different topological superconducting phases. The phase with N = 1 with a 2e^2/h conduction signature occurs in a narrow field regime during the QAHI magnetization reversal just before the QAHI enters the trivial insulating state. These results are consistent with theoretical analysis and further reaffirm the previous result of 1/2 quantization due to Majorana fermion.
