Clean takeoff of excess bonsai limbs

in #planes6 years ago (edited)

Pruning is much of the art of bonsai.

To achieve the miniaturized and varied shapes pruning is an absolute must. Both of limbs, leaves, shoots and roots.

Pruning of limbs is some of the most visible above ground modification that will be done.

The removal of limbs will depend on what is envisaged will be accomplished and where you are starting from.

If you are buying a ready made bonsai then pruning will typically be of the simple maintenance variety.

If you have purchased a small tree and are radically altering its shape it is a different matter and limb removal will be more excessive.

If the bonsai is started from seed then regular smaller type adjustments will be made over a number of years to reach the desired outcome.

Oh very nice job@sme, i could remember then when i was doing agricultural traning we do pruning for our cucumber and tomatoes to yield more fruit.

That’s funny! The other day, I was looking online to get one of these! the one I wanted was about $100! Thanks for the reminder, going to get me one now! 😂

the dangers of geeking out online over hand tools! Are they made in Japan or some Scandinavian country?

I was looking on amazon, I’m still looking if I want a small or medium... but more likely the medium 😀

how often do you prune them?

Nice tips and very complete post!
