☘️ DAT PLANT LYF ☘️
You may or may not know that I am addicted to plants. Yup, that’s me, a bonafide plant addict 🍃
So I am so excited to share with you that tomorrow I am going to my first Plant Swop 🌸
You may have seen the New Yorker video entitled “Why Millenials Love Their Houseplant Jungles”, and if you haven’t I encourage to give it a watch, it’s really interesting.
Anyway, Summer Rayne Oakes is an environmentalist who has a YouTube channel. She is my favorite YouTuber, besides the Bon appetit channel (because food porn), and she has extensive videos about plants, gardening and the culture that goes along with it. I love her videos because she is a super intelligent and well researched, and really gets down to the science of plants. One of her videos is about knowing how and when to water your plants, and it’s probably twenty minutes long. Her channel is definitely one of the better ones on there.
Anyway, I digress as always ❤️ On her blog, Homestead Brooklyn she has so many amazing articles on plant care etc, and while reading her latest article a while ago I saw that she is hosting Plant Swaps all over the world. I clicked the link to read more, sighing resignedly as I knew there wouldn’t be one in South Africa. I couldn’t believe my eyes when the very first location listed was right here in Cape Town! I immediately signed up and rsvped, and I am attending tomorrow! Very excited plant lady right here!
The rules of the Plant Swop are simple - bring up to three plants to swop with fellow plant lovers!
I am super excited to see what the other plant lovers bring - I’m hoping to swop my plant for something I’ve been dreaming about buying, like a Peace in the Home, or a Maidenhair Fern
I’ll be swopping my Mother in Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) which I propagated from a larger mother plant in my garden at work ( haha yes, like cats, I also have work plants, because I don’t have space in my apartment for all the plants, or cats 😂)
Mother in Law’s Tongue plants, or Snake Plants, are great for indoors as they don’t need much light, and watering once a week is normally sufficient. They are exceptionally hardy. I have a dark corner I’ve been wanting to put a plant in in my lounge, but everything I tried there didn’t fair too well, until I planted my propagated pups there, and so far, so good. 🍀
I’ll report back tomorrow with feedback, I’m super excited to be going, firstly, for the plants, and all the info I’m going to gleam, I think there will be guest speakers, and secondly, to meet new people! Thirdly, the venue is at a garden and arts centre that I’ve never been to before, in a super forestty part of Cape Town, so that is something else I’m looking forward to!
Yay for dat plant lyf
What a fabulous idea, plant swap! I can't wait to hear how many people attend and what kinds of plants show up!!!!! We are huge plant lovers, learning what works in our new home location :)
Yes, plants are amazing beings. There are so many varieties!

We moved from the the midwest US to Florida (southeast) Two totally different climates. In fact some of our "houseplants" are now our landscaping plants, lol :) Have fun! xx
Wow! That's pretty exciting, and I'm excited for you.
You think anybody would notice if you swapped a cat for a plant? Just askin' :)
Hahahha. Mork might, he would be quite unhappy if we got another cat.. imagine, an innocent plant goes out and in comes a not so innocent kitten. Rawr
What a cool idea and I hope all goes well at the swap

Plant swaps are the rage here in San Antonio, our Festival of Flowers a couple of weeks ago hosted one. Debbie brought 20 plants to swap, mostly succulents.
Oooo, that looks like it will be an amazing event, @princessmewmew! I hope you got the plants you were hoping to swap for, and I look forward to seeing an update about dat plant lyf! 💚🍃🌿🌱🌼
That is a very cool idea. With our house backing up to a major road, we have now had impromptu plant swaps--people driving by see a plant they want and find the front of our house, knock and ask if they can have a start. The last brought us a small heirloom tomato plant (tomatoes in our pico tonight) and a shishito pepper plant.
