Ants inside A Pair of Trousers - A Poem

Smaller than the buttons on an office shirt,
The belligerent ants marching on the road
Have no waist to hold a pair of trousers.
Nevertheless, they did collect the farmer's trousers
When they found themselves inside it.

Summary

This short poem is based on an African proverb which admonishes people to never underrate their enemies no matter how harmless and insignificant the enemies seem.

The above poem employs symbolism to illustrate the wisdom in the African proverb. The poem opens by first introducing some belligerent ants marching on the road. We are then told about a careless farmer who probably does not see the ants as a threat and get on their way. The narrative poem then tells us how the ants, the seemingly insignificant creatures, claim the farmer's trousers when the opportunity presents itself.
