The Protesters - An Original Poem
Thousands of protesters
Lashed by the rays of the sun
File on the highway
Like ants romancing a cube of sugar.
They carry anti-government placards,
Jauntily singing solidarity songs.
They sweat and cry,
"The government must reduce the price of bread,"
The leader of the protest told journalists
"Otherwise, we shall die here today."
And indeed some of the protesters died there,
For Suddenly, a truck loaded with soldiers and some policemen
Soon appeared in the distance
And opened fire at the protesters.
Everyone scampered to safety
And the once busy highway,
Became littered with the corpses of fallen men and women
Only that the price of bread remained the same.
